Maharashtra : Onion growers demand govt support at ₹ 3,000 per quintal as prices nosedive to ₹1 for a kilo.
Poduction cost of onions is much higher. Onion growers peg the cost at 22 rupees per kilogramme.
So, the one-rupee price is leaving most onion growers angry and teary eyed and stuck in the vicious cycle of loans and debt.
Onion growers in Maharashtra have been hit by unseasonal rains that impacted the quality of the produce.
Moreover, markets in Karnataka and Telangana are overflowing with local onions -- decreasing sales of the Maharashtra variety in those adjoining states.
