Last month, Rebeca Grynspan sat at the front of the United Nations’ soaring General Assembly Hall, before scores of diplomats, pitching her candidacy to become the global body’s next leader, one of the world’s most prominent positions. “Peace is what made it possible for my parents, two refugees from the Second World War, to find respect and dignity in a small country, Costa Rica,” she said in her opening remarks. “I am the daughter of this peace, a demonstration of what peace makes possible.” Those refugee parents were Jews fleeing persecution in Europe, and their daughter, one of four candidates to become the next UN secretary-general, if selected, would be the first Jew and the first woman to hold the post. A sharp decline in the value of the US dollar has cooled American demand for Israeli real estate in recent months, while purchases by French and British nationals have surged, according to a recent Finance Ministry report. American buyers comprised 49 percent of all foreign property purchases in the first quarter of 2026, compared to 60% a year earlier, the report found. However, the homes they acquired were significantly more expensive than those bought by other foreign nationals. Read more: timesofisrael.com/weakening-doll…

IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir has decided to officially dismiss ex-military advocate general Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi from service over her involvement in the Sde Teiman leak scandal, the military announced Tuesday. According to the IDF, Zamir suspended Tomer-Yerushalmi immediately after the allegations surfaced in November. Zamir decided to move forward with her formal dismissal due to the “severity of the alleged acts and suspicions,” amid ongoing criminal proceedings, it added. The IDF said that her dismissal also means that Tomer-Yerushalmi will lose eligibility for financial benefits normally granted to senior officers upon completing their military service. When Farah Pahlavi, empress-consort of Iran, was hosted by French president Georges Pompidou and his wife Claude in Paris at the beginning of the 1970s, she was enchanted by a new art installation the first couple had just commissioned at the Elysee Palace. The antechamber to their private apartments had been completely transformed by Israeli artist Yaacov Agam, a pioneer of kinetic art, into a swirl of colors and geometric shapes. “The Salon Agam, as it was called, was in their private apartments, so not that many people were able to see it, but [the empress] visited the president a few times. She saw my father’s work and was totally taken,” Ron Agam, Yaacov’s son and himself an artist, recalled. “My father received a phone call from [the president] saying that an important person wanted to meet with him,” he added. “We organized a presentation of his works in Paris. I was very young at the time, around 18. Her Majesty stayed for about an hour. She looked at many new works, and she acquired a number of them.” Read more: timesofisrael.com/10-agams-in-ir…

Sarah Tuttle-Singer: "This fantasy that Jew-hatred can be solved through “dialogue” assumes the person screaming at you actually wants a conversation. They don’t." Sarah Tuttle-Singer is the author of Jerusalem Drawn and Quartered and the New Media Editor at Times of Israel. She was raised in Venice Beach, California on Yiddish lullabies and Civil Rights anthems, and she now lives in Jerusalem with her 3 kids where she climbs roofs, explores cisterns, opens secret doors, talks to strangers, and writes stories about people — especially taxi drivers. Sarah also speaks before audiences left, right, and center through the Jewish Speakers Bureau, asking them to wrestle with important questions while celebrating their willingness to do so. She loves whisky and tacos and chocolate chip cookies and old maps and foreign coins and discovering new ideas from different perspectives. Sarah is a work in progress.
