Deaf culture tidbit: We keep our eyes open during group praying time. How else will we know what is being said? As the only deaf child in church, I was already used to having to search for visual cues on what to do. One Sunday, my aunt scolded me for not closing my eyes during prayer. I shut them. She had to walk from the organ to where I stood, to tap me on the shoulder. When I opened my eyes again, the prayer had ended, and I was the only one left standing. Everyone was staring. I think she got my point.

Hey, Dad, guess what happened today. Today your granddaughter poured a glass of cold milk. She returned the jug in the fridge and when she turned around to get her glass, she accidentally knocked it over. Milk spilled all over the counter and some of it dripped into the slightly opened drawer onto the silverware. Not fun. I didn’t yell. I didn’t hit her. I didn’t beat her with a belt and called her names until she bled from the belt buckle breaking the skin. I picked up a kitchen towel and helped her cleaned up. Together we took out the silverware to wash them. We cleaned the drawer. While we cleaned, we talked about her homework and how math just sucks. We laughed at the dog who was sleeping in a weird position. I got another glass and poured her some more milk and sent her off to finish her math homework. Dad, I broke the cycle. Your cycle. Papa B’s cycle. And his father’s cycle. Seriously, why did you overreact over the stupidest shit? Was the belt worth the $2 gallon of milk? You’re gone now, and I hate that even nearly 50 years later, when I see a glass of milk being spilt, I still wince…I still shake inside with fear…and I still want to cry. What the hell, Dad? It was just milk. #breakthecycle

I have six scars from being attacked as a special education/deaf ed teacher in the 26 years I've been in education. Once was from a pencil that missed my heart within inches. I was blamed for each incident: Not quick enough, not proactive, etc. I had to re-take restraint training each time. One "first-year counseling staff" asked if I tried "building a healthy relationship with the student," and I told her she was stupid for asking me that question. Don't minimize how severe autism impacts some children's communication and impulsive behavior. It's not the teachers. It's not the parents. It's autism.
