Since my days as a graduate student, I have been interested in using carboranes as substituents on heteroatoms to tune electronics, similar to classical alkyl and aryl groups.
Over the years, our group and others have demonstrated that C-bound carboranes are actually strongly electron withdrawing, comparable to classical perfluoroarenes.
In our latest preprint (tinyurl.com/2mndp5j2), Vicki Rubio shows that this concept extends to the heavy pnictogens, revealing that carborane substitution allows for the construction of highly Lewis acidic Sb(V) centers. A special shout out goes to all coauthors and especially Osvaldo Gutierrez and his team for their contributions to the theoretical and computational aspects of this work.
