5 days in Latam meeting local founders, VCs, LPs and I noticed that everyone I met lives in two places and carries two passports: Panama + Miami, Colombia + Miami, Venezuela + Madrid, Guatemala + Austin, Mexico + NYC… A prepared mind + body, ready to be where they need to be 💪🏼

I zoomed with a founder at his (fancy) house in The Hamptons. He’d been a successful exec before but this is his first startup. I asked if he considered bootstrapping instead? He looked surprised. No idea why you’d want to raise outside capital if you didn’t have to?

A well known VC just told me that I’m not even running a pre-seed fund strategy but rather an angel fund. My check size is $200k and the average round I’m investing into is $1m. Do I need to rebrand yet again? Wdyt?

@jefielding I have always preferred short and sweet (pitching)😉

Many over-educated founders don’t pitch well. They’ve been trained that smarter is better and more detail shows that you are smarter… so they often complicate the pitch. In startup land, less is more and simplicity wins.

@jd I have seen a number of B2B startups adopt Teams since most of their corporate clients use it. Not a favorite for B2C plays

It might be harsh but I am not sure I have ever invested in a startup that uses MS Teams for video conferencing. Am I being unfair?

I just told a founder who is raising that 1/2 of the people on Twitter / LI with ‘Investor’ in their bios are not actually investing. 1/4 never invested (sounds cool or work in an adjacent area like platform) 1/4 out of cash His was surprised! 🤯

Startup based in the UK opened an office in Italy. Hired a local and within the 3 month ‘probationary’ period, things didn’t work out so terminated the employee. But because the company didn’t wait until the end of the 3rd month to terminate, employee sued the company who had to pay 3 years of salary. Strange Italian loophole of sorts. Holy Wow - that was an expensive hire! If you’re going to expand internationally, make sure you have solid legal guidance. I love Italy but this makes it hard to scale up there :(

First vertical SaaS deck that I’ve reviewed this year that doesn’t mention AI on the first slide. I’m genuinely puzzled 🧐 Founder, who has a background in ML and is based in Belfast responds to my look of confusion… Adding AI into the product takes time and ‘needs to be earned’ and they are nowhere near the point of genuinely incorporating it. Wow.

We used to call "unicorn" $1b+ valuation startups. What do we call the AI startups that raise $1b+ on $10b+ valuations?

In the past startups raising or selling at a $1b valuation seemed crazy. Today AI startups are raising $1b with multiple $b valuations. Economy has seen really high inflation recently but the tech space has its own vertiginous inflation...

NYC tech is on fire right now🔥The energy is insane and I find myself attending 3-5 events a day. Quality and diversity of companies is mind blowing. Just today, I met with two deep tech, one AI and one climate / insurance company. Wish I could fund them all. If you’re an investors and not leaning into NYC, you are missing out big time🗽
