Van gained valuable experienced during his Redshirt years in the FBS program, before transferring to Holmes CC (MS), appearing in 6 games, and then transferring to Jacksonville Athletic Academy (FL) and appearing in X games with X stats. Van is a versatile defensive lineman with good size, burst and general athletic ability. He has a deep toolbox in respect of getting into the backfield, taking reps anywhere from shaded over the Center to playing as a 5-tech, causing mis-matches for opposition O-linemen. Moving forward, he profiles best as a 4-3 3t – with the requisite burst, motor and finish to get home on the interior of the defense. Van demonstrates great get off with burst, and attacks with a pass rush plan, adapting to the picture that is presented with a very able swim/rip move that consistently launches Van into the backfield. When the play extends outside the numbers, Van’s motor shows up on film, hustling to force ball carriers out of bounds, and finishes in frame on a regular basis. Van uses his eyes to great effect, ensuring he doesn’t lose track of the QB, and can retrace his steps to finish reps. Van was the workhorse on the defensive line, penetrating and creating pressures that then allowed his teammates to clean up the sacks and get the defense off the field. Van’s physical maturity, combined with his high motor and versatile skillset to play anywhere on the defensive line represent a key player that any program can plug and play. Programs targeting a versatile defensive lineman and a solid 3-tech can improve their DL room by adding Van.
