This seems likes a very broad policy suggestion. MPAs exist for many reasons. Around Wales there are large MPAs for harbour porpoise, they are not designed based on seabed habitats. Banning bottom fishing from vast MPAs like this may have complex unintended outcomes.

BREAKING 📢 The Government's own MPs and many others across parties call for a BAN on destructive bottom-trawl fishing in offshore marine protected areas🪸 This intervention from the Environmental Audit Committee shows that pressure is building 💥💥💥 theguardian.com/environment/20…

@MuseumsAssoc This seems a very broad negative position to take. The position seems to be removing anything living thing from the sea is exploitation, and therefore negative. Many museums and public aquaria have fantastic living displays with no measurable negative impact in their context

Today's #Museum30 theme is NAME. So here's just a few of the new species that have been discovered, described & named by @AmgueddfaCymru scientists & their colleagues. This work is the vital foundation stone in understanding & conserving species in a changing world

Researchers @sos_bangor_uni believe they’ve found HMS Stephen Furness, a WWI ship lost in 1917 with over 100 crew. Located via sonar & digital archives through the #UnpathdWaters project, this find reveals history hidden beneath the Irish Sea. More: bit.ly/4elQocf

I see people often quote that seagrass captures more carbon than rainforests when promoting seagrass restoration in Wales, UK. The relevant comparison is between Welsh seagrass habs vs. adjacent sediment that lacks seagrass, not land ecosystems which don't exist here. #bluecarbon

The work of @CardiffCurator in marine taxonomy is important. I have especially benefitted from the expertise of their bivalve expert/curator Anna Holmes during my research. I hope their work will be well supported by @WelshGovernment into the future #TaxonomistAppreciationDay

@LewisPugh Two of most important metrics of our time? I disagree. Human life expectancy and child mortality.

Below are the two most important metrics of our time. Top: the decline of biodiversity between 1970-2018. Below: global temperatures between 1850-2022.

@TimothyWhitton @zeiss_micro 1) They are a good questions. I have seen 'tangles' in simple 'collected seawater', but it is impossible to exclude their generation in the cod end of the net during sample collection. I don't wash samples.

Invisible to the naked eye, under the microscope you can clearly see the plastic microfiber death-traps in my latest plankton sample. Our synthetic materials are a serious pollution threat to the ocean. @zeiss_micro

Interesting report. Clear about uncertainty, knowledge gaps, inconsistency in models, observations, remotely sensed data 'Observed trends in storms and waves cannot be directly attributed to climate change because of the high variability and limited understanding of mechanisms.'
