Chestnut is a recessive trait, so a horse needs to inherit the chestnut allele from both parents to actually be chestnut.
Deep Impact himself didn’t carry the chestnut gene, which means none of his direct offspring could ever be chestnut. It only becomes possible again in later generations if the gene is reintroduced.
White coats like Sodashi’s, on the other hand, are caused by a dominant. That’s why inheriting the KIT mutation from just one parent is enough for the foal to be white.
So theoretically, a white mare has about a 50% chance of producing a white foal.

Coat color traits can be dominant or recessive, and the white coat gene is dominant. So if a foal inherits the KIT mutation from one parent (the white one), it will also have a white coat. That’s why the probability of a white foal is about 50% when one parent is white.
