His message is particularly timely in a context of an increasing scramble for critical minerals (increasing our dependence minerals such as cobalt, often produced by ASM) and the avalanche of EU due diligence legislation.

Today, my colleague Guus Houttuin promoted the @EPRM_RVO in the @Europarl_EN as the only accompanying measure to the EU Regulation on Responsible Minerals Sourcing, underlining the need for more multi-stakeholder support for artisanal and small-scale mining. #ASM #EPRM

Whilst proposed models of cohabitation can provide a short-term pragmatic response to mitigate escalated tensions, they should not be viewed in any way as a strategy capable of addressing the structural inequalities that are at the heart of these tense interactions.

The conflicting interests, multiple realities and ambiguities that characterise the spaces in which residents of ASM communities and the management of mining companies compete over access to land, provide an extremely fragile and unsustainable foundation for cohabitation.

I wrote a summary for policymakers of my PhD thesis in English and French. It focusses on maximising the development potential of the gold mining sector (both artisanal and industrial mining) in Côte d'Ivoire. Just send me a message if you would like to receive a copy!

Models of cohabitation, where mining companies partner with artisanal miners, can be used as a pragmatic response to reduce tensions over the short term, but should not be viewed as a strategy that addresses the structural inequality that often lays at the root of tensions.

I promote the need for a more 'relational' approach towards mineral governance, recognising artisanal and industrial mining relate to each other. Governance approaches are too fragmented and isolated, when it comes to understanding the root causes for tensions between operators.
