“Sankara Didn’t Just Die in a Coup — He Challenged an Empire That Was Still Writing the Rules” The assassination of Thomas Sankara in 1987 is still one of Africa’s most debated political ruptures. Officially described as an internal coup led by his former ally, Blaise Compaoré, the event reshaped Burkina Faso overnight. But many historians and political critics argue that the story does not end within Burkina Faso’s borders. Sankara was not a typical leader. He rejected foreign dependency, cut government luxury spending, redistributed land, and openly challenged neo-colonial economic influence in Africa. His policies disrupted long-standing external interests in the region. After his death, Compaoré ruled for 27 years—during which Burkina Faso’s foreign relations, especially with France, stabilized and strengthened. This is where the debate begins. Some analysts and post-colonial scholars argue that external powers, particularly Government of France, benefited from the post-coup political order. Others caution that while France maintained strong ties with Compaoré’s government, direct proof of orchestration remains contested and heavily debated among historians. What is not debated is this: Sankara represented a radical break from existing systems. And his removal ensured those systems were not fully dismantled. So the deeper question remains: Was this simply a national power struggle… or a geopolitical correction of a leader who moved too far, too fast? And why do revolutionary leaders often become most vulnerable when they challenge global economic interests? History rarely speaks in one voice. But silence around certain events is also a form of speech. References: • Saul, John S. Crisis in Burkina Faso: The Sankara Era • Harsch, Ernest. It’s fine really, I’m not a victim. No one can ever bully me on the internet. My restraint is only because I hold myself to God’s standard and in service to the children I stand in the gap for. I spent 7 months under Oshodi Bridge working in the worst conditions with some of the most violent people. Twitter trolling is at best amusing and I’m mostly just laughing at the comments and blocking aggressive people. I have a full life away from here. But it’s important that I continue to use this account to remind us that there’s still some good in the world. I’ll never stop🙏🏾

Personally I don't like what that guy is doing to Tunde Onakoya. There should always be room for nuance, and Tunde is a great guy who has positively changed the lives of many young boys in the slum. I don't accept the bully towards him.
