not all of you are cut out for academia. the purpose of research is for you to add value by contributing to the literature. you cannot contribute to literature you have not read, and it’s somewhat narcissistic to think you can.

@eiszett Have you read all the sources you ever cited? During my PhD we, along with dozens of other papers, cited a paper that I later found did not contain the result for which it was commonly cited. I should be banned I guess.

@ToPiraeus A lot of other Arabs and non developed countries still view Bedouin as lazy and unintelligent
Infact, developed countries have a more romantic view of the noble savage
English

the narrative of gulf states as countries that just “got lucky” because of their oil reserves is, quite frankly, the laziest take i’ve ever come across.
concepts such as the resource curse exist precisely because the most resource abundant nations are typically the ones that suffer the most. escaping the resource trap was, in fact, not an accident. it was the work our ancestors put in to build a nation that stands on solid ground.
but of course the coloniser mindset persists and they cannot stand the fact that simple bedouins were able to build empires. why humble yourself and actually analyse how the gulf was able to build their empires and learn from them when you could discredit them and chalk it up to luck instead?
English

@Obaidsview the perspective of arabs as lazy and unintelligent is the coloniser mindset.
English

@ToPiraeus Its not even a coloniser mindset, this idea is most strongly expressed by other colonised countries who failed to develop

@finestlibyan sometimes it’s better to remain quiet rather than make a fool of ourself speaking on a topic we don’t understand
English

@ToPiraeus I don’t think it’s a hot take, everyone with a brain can see “circuses and bread” is state policy for the Gulf monarchies.
English

I don’t think your kings would be happy with the their citizens developing the critical thinking skills that comes with an academic culture.
But what do I know I’m just an ignorant foreigner ✌🏼
🦌@ToPiraeus
praying for the rise of academics in the gulf because i am so fed up with reading the hot takes foreigners have about the gulf despite knowing nothing about our history, culture, economy, political systems, or reality at all.
