@dgt10011 Jeff, how do you see the tokenization of assets (stocks, ETFs, other RWA’s) providing a global stage for providing the boomers exit liquidity they need? It seems to me that if nothing else, it provides some additional runway? Years if not decades.

Once STRC's dividend rate starts to be adjusted downwards, STRF will likely trade up as people will see the merits of locking in the yield with superior credit quality.

Jeff, you’re my go to guy on this stuff. Would like your take on how to most effectively move from the “housing, bonds, US Equities” trifecta to a better 60/40 split - or, is this article implying a different split now? Also … from a more logistical perspective, the way many of us own our nomadic capital is by traditional means … ETF’s or via custodians.

@Jono_The_Dad Thank you! The world is so complex and uncertain right now that people forget the basics: what you know is just as important as what you don't know, manage liquidity to be in control of arriving to your destination, and have conviction along the way.

30 years ago, Dean Pomerleau and I drove a minivan across America and barely touched the wheel. A laptop, a camera, and a lot of duct tape. Thanks to @CarnegieMellon and @CMU_Robotics for this conversation about where self-driving cars started — and where they’re going

Writing Driven meant digging through 30 years of material I hadn't touched since the 90s. The raw demo footage. The Letterman clip. The Business Week spread. The Navlab trading cards and AHS Demo Ticket. All of it is in The Archive at Jochem Family Press — go explore. jochemfamilypress.com/driven-media

AI threatens hierarchy before it threatens jobs. The public conversation focuses on displacement — who loses their role, which positions get automated. That's real. But it's incomplete, and the incompleteness is doing damage. Because it draws attention away from where integration actually fails. AI fails inside organizations for human reasons before technical ones. It threatens what people are good at. What they've spent decades doing to rise to their positions. The status that comes from being the person who knows, the person who decides, the person whose experience makes them indispensable. The intelligence substrate doesn't just make organizations smarter. It makes them transparent. Credit gets attributed to who actually had the insight. Political reasoning loses power when hard data is instantly available to everyone. The substrate is a transparency engine — and transparency is the natural enemy of status-based power. Nobody is saying middle managers will be first to go. But the compression of the middle layer is the more likely structural outcome than entry-level displacement. And the 20-year domain expert? They're not threatened by AI. They're multiplied by it — if they lean in. The pivot isn't from expert to generalist. It's from gatekeeper to multiplier. Military evolution — boots to air power to drones — took a hundred years. Inside organizations, AI compresses that same structural disruption into months. Architecture before deployment. Humans before systems. Honesty before comfort. airatelier.ai/essays/intelli… ai/r | airatelier.ai

Dario Amodei just gave his first interview since the Pentagon blacklisted his company. The toll is visible on his face. He was asked one question. What would you say to the President right now? He didn’t hesitate. Amodei: “We are patriotic Americans. Everything we have done has been for the sake of this country.” Anthropic built their models to defend America. They were the first AI lab cleared for classified military systems. They wanted to help the warfighter. But the Pentagon demanded unrestricted access to fully autonomous weapons and mass surveillance of American citizens. Amodei drew the line. The government responded with emergency Cold War powers. A supply chain designation normally reserved for foreign adversaries. A six-month federal phaseout ordered from Truth Social. Amodei: “When we were threatened with supply chain designation and Defense Production Act, which are unprecedented intrusions into the private economy, we exercised our classic First Amendment rights to speak up and disagree with the government.” The administration framed Anthropic’s refusal as anti-American. Amodei’s response dismantled that framing in one sentence. Amodei: “Disagreeing with the government is the most American thing in the world.” Here is the deeper paradox nobody in Washington wants to say out loud. We are in a geopolitical race against autocratic adversaries who use AI for mass surveillance of their own citizens and autonomous weapons with no human oversight. The Pentagon demanded that Anthropic build those exact capabilities for America. Amodei: “The red lines we have drawn, we drew because we believe that crossing those red lines is contrary to American values.” You cannot defeat authoritarianism by adopting its methods. You cannot defend the open society by forcing private companies to build its antithesis under threat of wartime emergency powers. Anthropic held the line. Got blacklisted for it. And came out the other side saying the same thing they said going in. That is what it actually looks like to mean it.

Trump just banned Anthropic from the entire federal government. That's the headline. Here's what actually happened. Hegseth designated Anthropic a "supply chain risk," which means every contractor, supplier, and partner that does business with the U.S. military is now banned from conducting any commercial activity with Anthropic. Effective immediately. The defense industrial base includes roughly 60,000 companies. The $200 million Pentagon contract was 1.4% of Anthropic's $14 billion revenue. Survivable. The supply chain label is a different animal entirely. Boeing and Lockheed Martin were already asked this week to assess their Anthropic exposure. Anthropic says eight of the ten largest U.S. companies use Claude. Many hold defense contracts. Those companies now have to certify they don't touch Claude in their Pentagon workflows, or potentially drop it entirely to stay clean. One policy analyst estimated that "some large portion" of Anthropic's existing customer base could evaporate because they either have government contracts or want them in the future. The designation is normally reserved for Huawei and firms linked to the Chinese Communist Party. The company that voluntarily cut off hundreds of millions in Chinese revenue, shut down CCP-sponsored cyberattacks, and advocated for chip export controls now sits in the same category. The two contract terms they refused to drop: mass domestic surveillance of Americans and fully autonomous weapons with no human oversight. The capability gap the Pentagon just created is staggering. Claude is the only AI model actively running on classified military networks. It was used in the Maduro raid through Palantir. It operates inside national nuclear laboratories. xAI signed the "any lawful use" terms to get Grok into classified systems, but defense officials privately admit Grok can't match Claude. The six-month phaseout exists because they banned the model they depend on and have no substitute ready. Then the industry response broke the Pentagon's strategy. Over 330 employees from Google and OpenAI signed a solidarity letter. Sam Altman went on CNBC and said OpenAI holds the same red lines. The Pentagon picked this fight to establish that AI companies serve without conditions. Instead it unified the industry around the exact two guardrails it wanted eliminated. Anthropic is planning to go public this year, valued at $380 billion. Whether the supply chain risk label actually forces Fortune 10 companies to drop Claude or quietly dies in legal challenges will determine everything. The Pentagon is about to find out how many of those 60,000 contractors use Claude. That number is the only one that matters now.

This is the first AI cut. And it will send shockwaves. Remember: Jack is one of the greatest founders of all time. He created this platform that we’re all on, and has been early to many technological shifts. And Block was doing very well as a business. So, for him to cut 40% of headcount in this way is a signal to everyone in tech: get good now. Become indispensable. Work nights and weekends. Learn the AI tools and raise your game. Or you might not make the cut, as an employee or as a company. I know. That sucks. But capitalism is natural selection. The market is unforgiving, because you are the market. After all, it’s not like you’re buying some random gallon of milk from the store; you’re always buying the best product at the best price. So too for apps: your customers are always installing the best piece of code they can get. And because AI is going to create new winners, if you aren’t the best in your market, someone may become better with AI. Particularly with the new agentic workflows. To be clear: Block’s severance is generous by any measure. 20 weeks of pay, six months of health insurance and vested equity, all of that goes far beyond any typical package. Jack did his level best to cushion the disruption. The laid off are a temporarily unfortunate class, as opposed to a permanent underclass. But had he not leaned into the AI transition, he might have had to lay off more people, slowly, and over time, as faster competitors went after his market share. How would they do that? Sure, AI isn’t a panacea by any means, but the closer you are to software engineering the more aggressively you need to embrace agentic workflows. The AI companies are already doing that, and places like Stripe, Shopify, Coinbase, and now Block are pushing hard on this area. There will be overcorrection. But the fundamental technical innovation is real. And you need to either disrupt yourself or get disrupted.
