I wrote a blog on the state and challenges of development for Canadian road racers. It's meant as a conversation starter. Constructive suggestions, corrections and feedback welcome ! toguritraining.com/blogue/7wkk2jj…

Wow. Great interview if you’re interested in athlete development or like listening to real leaders.

@9mmsmg Does using the “standard deviation” of a guessed “IQ” whose tests are notoriously inaccurate to make a preachy point about proper behavior and consequences actually enact what you are warning against?

Watching Terrence Howard getting broken by Eric Weinstein is the perfect example of how having a 115-120 IQ and believing you have a 150 is so destructive. Terrence is not unintelligent, but he also believes himself to be far more intelligent than he is. This can be more dangerous than an 80 IQ. The reason is, if you're roughly one standard deviation from the mean, you can sound convincing to people who don't know any better. Rarely will people listen to an imbecile.

@StephenSeiler ALL of these thoughts inform my coaching of YOUNG high performance cyclists. Thx for organizing them in a list as they are hard to communicate in ways that help athletes understand targeted training stresses / goals while self-directing intensity vs recovery.

@stevemagness @mboyle1959 In North American cycling ‘high performance’ coaches who make a living as coaches (vs faculty) must always fight against the marketing of “no pain no gain”. Takes years to create an informed vs influenced culture

Group exercise classes (Peloton, Soul cycle, orange theory) tend to have the everyday person train too hard. Why? People judge the value of the workout based on their effort. Sweat and work hard= good workout Most training should be pretty comfortable, but easy doesn't sell.

@JoseBeenTV are you aware the mic is on? I ask supportively because it sounds like you're on a lunch break. Everyone watching @MarylandClassic can hear the commentators talking about everything but the race itself.

Ok. @c11miles is up the road again after the reshuffle. With another former Silber rider- Julien Gagne. The peloton has fanned out so here we go. Long haul @MarylandClassic

@Alan_Couzens @StephenSeiler I agrée but my understanding of the ask was for terms that better communicate metabolic pathways to counter binary thinking produced by ‘zones’ & aerobic/anaerobic. That said, I use these terms but often wish a succinct SHARED lexicon helped better explain target training stress

I would say that it's only binary if you think it's binary. In your example, the same could be said. Even when there is "hyperglycolytic" stuff going on, there is still "non-hyperglycolytic", i.e oxidative glycolytic energy provision taking place. The problem isn't in the terms, it's in the binary thinking.

The pragmatic and evidence based solution: Reduce glycaemic carbs substantially. Consume high quality lean protein. Consume plenty poly-unsaturated fats. In short: a mediterranean diet without all the bread and pasta is probably the healthiest way to eat.

@JeroenSwart Thx for this. Louise Burke’s lit review (2018/2021) pointed to another danger of LCHF diets: impaired use of muscle glycogen, a disaster for most endurance athletes. Does this still stand? sports nutrition is such a rapidly growing discipline. It’s a genuine question.
