@player2moo @solana According to the following article, the clock being out of sync shouldn’t impact the performance of the network, but it could contribute to reduced earning and staking rewards. Hope this helps! Sorry for the long winded response haha

Update on S³: Slow Slot Solana 80% of stake has upgraded to 1.9.25 or 1.10.20 which contain an increased executor cache, which it was hoped would alleviate replay pressure and improve slot times. This quick fix wasn't sufficient. Below a 🧵 with recent developments...

@player2moo @solana But currently the slot time is taking longer than 400 ms (~730 ms at present), resulting in the Solana clock running 30 mins behind standard time.

@player2moo @solana From my understanding there’s an upper limit on how quickly validators can process the hashes due to hardware constraints, giving the ideal 400 ms slot time.

@player2moo @solana The number of hashes that get processed per second determines the amount of data that gets produced. This determines how much GPU power is needed to process the data, and therefore how much time is needed to verify the hashes.

@player2moo @solana Calculating the output from the hash takes time, which means there is a certain interval of time before the next hash can be processed.

@player2moo @solana The PoH clock is a SHA256 function. This is basically an algorithm for processing hashes containing transaction info, where the output for processing one hash forms the input to process the next hash.

Solana halt today, what happened? A bug relating to durable nonces was triggered on a majority of validators, leading to a block hash mismatch & validators stalling. This was actually a known bug that was being fixed and hadn't been triggered in this form previously.
