bros completely ignoring the brutality of one side xd
Ursula von der Leyen@vonderleyen
The full scale of the brutality of the Hamas terror attack leaves us breathless. Defenseless people, brutally murdered in cold blood on the streets. We stand strong with Israel and its people. Today the EU and Israeli flags fly side by side.

This meme actually unfolding on Twitter right now over that NYT article on Girkin.
For anyone still confused about why it was bad, let me try and break it down.
A standard principle of news journalism is to prioritise key details most relevant to the story. (The opposite is called “burying the lede”.)
Girkin is a mass murdering terrorist responsible for blowing a packed civilian airliner out of the sky while a commander during russia’s war against Ukraine, which started in 2014.
So for the NYT to introduce him as a Kremlin critic and not even bury the lede by mentioning key details further down in the article is seriously strange from a journalistic perspective. It’s like referring to Osama as the Saudi regime critic.
But this is about something much deeper than a lapse in journalistic norms.
Overlooking russia’s atrocities and normalising people who commit them reflects a russian imperialist mindset.
And that reflects a much wider problem at publications like the NYT being too easily duped by Kremlin narratives. A key part of that has been the Kremlin’s absolutely absurd denial that russia invaded Ukraine in 2014, which a lot of international reporters treated way too credibly.
And that ties directly back to what the NYT is omitting in this latest Girkin article by ignoring his role in russia’s war that began in 2014.
And all this is very obvious to millions of people who neighbour russia even before we realised the article was written by a Russian Moscow correspondent with a history of deeply russian chauvinist views and associations.
And it’s shocking that we have to explain to journalists the very basics of journalism and the importance of incorporating the perspectives of people experiencing russian aggression when writing about russian aggression.

National song & dance festivals are now underway in both Latvia & Estonia.
These Baltic festivals (in Lithuania too) are listed by UNESCO as ‘Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity’. They include some of the largest joint choirs in the world with more than 30,000 performing on stage together.
They’re essential for understanding the history and culture of our nations.
For Latvia, it’s the big 150th anniversary taking place. Here in Estonia (shown in this video), it’s the youth version of the festival this year.
No bad take here. Well, it’s a badly taken video. Nothing can come close to conveying the incredible atmosphere of these occasions until you come and experience it.

Not to be corny but I just don’t get how you can live in the world we live in and not overwhelmingly understand that loving each other and love in general is literally the only thing that matters at all

BREAKING 🚨 Estonia has just become the first ex-Soviet state to legalise same-sex marriage.
For many this isn’t just a huge win for LGBTQ+ rights in the Baltics, but also a statement against Moscow’s treatment of queer people.

It's official: #Estonia has legalised marriage equality. We join other Nordic nations with this historic decision.
I'm proud of my country. We're building a society where everyone’s rights are respected and people can love freely.
The decision will enter into force from 2024.
