In 1806 the British invaded Buenos Aires. They were assisted by an Irish spy, James Burke. 'Burke in the Land of Silver' is based on his true story. mybook.to/LandofSilver

I’m working on a contemporary urban fantasy, featuring a modern version of the Hell-Fire Club. I've taken a look at the history, so my Substack this week is 18th century sexual perversion and politics, neatly tied to adventures now on a Caribbean island. tomcw99.substack.com/p/do-what-you-…

Historia – the HWA@HistoriaHWA·
Wolfe Tone, the United Irishmen and the Rebellion of 1798 are the subjects of Tom Williams's Historia feature at historiamag.com/why-i-wrote-ab…. A less-known conflict in Ireland, but one which led to the Union of 1801. And some iconic songs🧵

It’s a short post on Substack this week. I write about Canterbury Cathedral and an unexpected link to Gibraltar and about thoughts on a possible new Galbraith & Pole book. substack.com/home/post/p-18…

My latest Substack is reviews. There are a couple of non-fiction and some lighter reading plus, for those who didn’t see it earlier, a link to my review of the new musical, ‘Midnight’. tomcw99.substack.com/p/lately-ive-b…

At the weekend, I went to see ‘Midnight’, a new musical at Sadler’s Wells East. My beloved and I were very impressed, so we talked about it this morning and recorded the conversation as a podcast. You can hear it here: tomcw99.substack.com/p/midnight #Midnight

After two long posts on late 18th century siege warfare (OK, really just going on about a holiday in Gibraltar) a very lightweight piece about cacti (with just a tiny bit about Gibraltar). Enjoy! substack.com/home/post/p-18… #MondayBlogs

Isobel Gowdie: I Shall Go into a Hare Read the post: ailishsinclair.com/2025/07/isobel… “I shall go into a hare,
With sorrow and sych and meickle care...” The quote is part of the extraordinary witchcraft confessions of Isobel Gowdie from 1662. #MondayBlogs #History

@Artemisapphire I've noticed that if I turn up somewhere mid-market looking shabby, they can be a bit sniffy. On those rare occasions I've unexpectedly found myself going somewhere posh and I'm dressed like a tramp, there isn't even the flicker of an eyebrow. Class in England is complicated.

Generally speaking the rich ones wear coral trousers and tweed, except when wearing jeans and a t-shirt, and the not rich ones wear a North Face jacket, and jeans and a t-shirt That's pretty much the only major difference

In UK, you can’t tell who’s rich or who’s poor. Everyone is conservative, respectful and mostly ride 1-2 cars. The culture of “Money na water” is despicable at best!

The Great Siege of Gibraltar (1779 - 1783) had consequences that reached far beyond the 18th century. Developments in artillery led to changes in the way big guns are used even today. More historical musings from my holiday. substack.com/home/post/p-18… #MondayBlogs

I hate the ‘screens are evil’ howls you hear all the time, but this post looks at the issue in a more balanced way. I may not agree with all of it, but it is worth thinking on. #MondayBlogs
