@TweetsByMarkT Our "Predicting Soccer Highlights from Spatio-Temporal Match Event Streams" paper from early 2017 used a similar kind of visualization. I believe this type of chart was not yet commonly used at the time, but perhaps @TomDecroos or @jessejdavis1 can provide more insight.

Football data graphics types, where did momentum charts come from? There was definitely a period when a bunch of places started doing them but I can't really remember who or where were the key drivers in popularising them
