"See that little stream — we could walk to it in two minutes. It took the British a month to walk to it — a whole empire walking very slowly, dying in front and pushing forward behind. And another empire walked very slowly backward a few inches a day, leaving the dead like a million bloody rugs. No Europeans will ever do that again in this generation.” "Why, they’ve only just quit over in Turkey,” said Abe. “And in Morocco —” “That’s different. This western-front business couldn’t be done again, not for a long time. The young men think they could do it but they couldn’t. They could fight the first Marne again but not this. This took religion and years of plenty and tremendous sureties and the exact relation that existed between the classes. The Russians and Italians weren’t any good on this front. You had to have a whole-souled sentimental equipment going back further than you could remember. You had to remember Christmas, and postcards of the Crown Prince and his fiancée, and little cafés in Valence and beer gardens in Unter den Linden and weddings at the mairie, and going to the Derby, and your grandfather’s whiskers.” “General Grant invented this kind of battle at Petersburg in sixty- five.” “No, he didn’t — he just invented mass butchery. This kind of battle was invented by Lewis Carroll and Jules Verne and whoever wrote Undine, and country deacons bowling and marraines in Marseilles and girls seduced in the back lanes of Wurtemburg and Westphalia. Why, this was a love battle — there was a century of middle-class love spent here. This was the last love battle.

20% of Old Etonians, the men expected to govern Britain and trained from birth to do so, died in the war The best men of every class perished in Flanders, as it was they who rallied to the colors immediately and were chewed up for years The Great War was probably the most dysgenic conflict in history, as the weak or cowardly remained behind the lines as the strong and brave perished on a titanic scale It is such a tragedy

My issue with this cbk and jfk jr style thing is that people aren’t taking inspiration from it, they’re literally trying to recreate it. Style is questioning what do I like about this and how can I make it my own thing? Nobody wants to do the work.

New York only shows you what you are capable of seeing. It reflects each persons ability. A limited person will only see limitations an optimist gets the entire world. Choose your own adventure

A lot of 27-33 year old men trying to be Anthony Bourdain. Cowardly. I’m Action Bronson-maxxing. I’m on the phone with a Turkish saffron broker at the baccarat table. I’m providing color commentary on arms deals. You bought black American spirits and called it “a vibe”

Gabrielle Hecht once analogized the symbolism of the nuclear reactor in French postcolonial culture to that of the cathedral for the ancien regime and that image has stuck with me ever since.

French anthem “La Marseillaise” sung , next to the 'Le Temeraire' SLBM at the nuclear submarines 🇨🇵 Navy base Ile Longue in Crozon, following President Emmanuel Macron’s major speech on French nuclear deterrence and European security.

speaking as glibly as Beavis & Butthead. does T***p even grasp the profound significance of what he has set in motion in the Middle East? this person whose most essential self is riding in a golf cart fatly, cheating at the profoundly insignificant game of leisure golf when he assumes no one is looking.

Pres Trump told me tonight the US had identified possible candidates to take over Iran, but they were killed in the initial attack. "The attack was so successful it knocked out most of the candidates," Trump told me. "It's not going to be anybody that we were thinking of because they are all dead. Second or third place is dead."

“Why on earth would Israel bomb a school intentionally?” is the question of our era, and I am glad you are curious.
Daniella Greenbaum Davis@DGreenbaum

@camkasky Cameron, on the off chance that a school for young girls was actually bombed - obviously the most likely reason would be an error. Why on earth would they bomb a school intentionally? how would that help their goals?

I hope you aren’t drunk and took your staff’s advice, Rashida and I don’t know this man and feel confident he didn’t care about us. Please restrain from drinking too much as you have been warned from your staff and stay off social media when you are drunk. I pray in his holy month you find peace and respect for your self,
