@adamboxer1 @mrshowell24 Agreed - when I was an nqt we were told we had to use partner talk at least 8 times a lesson. Arbitary tick box which didn’t improve teaching at all.

@mrshowell24 Have to say i find stuff like this deeply problematic. Encourages a tick box approach to teaching and observing, leading to shallow understanding and a culture of compliance. It simply cannot substitute for deep pedagogical knowledge and observational skill.

@ProudlyPastoral Completely agree - on the headline you think a ban seems harsh and then you read the article and think - why wasn’t that the headline?

oh i see. well, I am a HUGE fan of explicit instruction, and Hughes' and Archer's book of that title. And I/We/You is laid out there. I think the gist of it is completely right, and their presentation of it is strong. But I think that specific part is problematic as a teaching strategy/planning device, for various reasons that one day I will have to write about. But in answer to your original question, I am a fan of many mainstream ideas, like the use of mini-whiteboards, Teach Like a Champion, high standards of behaviour etc etc. You are right, I don't accept things just because they are popular. And consistently the things I write critiquing popular ideas are the least engaged-with things I write. Of course, that could be because I'm wrong, but it also could be because I'm right. I don't think it's possible to know.

@smorrisey My unpopular opinion is that etymology is a significantly less efficient way to teach word meaning than just teaching what the word means

Looks like the biggest fire sale ever conducted by a football club is under way on Tyneside in a bid to stave off the adminstrators & keep the club afloat Stadium sold off to the Saudis to keep the bailifs at bay, Every player up for sale, 56% of the airport already gone to Sunderland, Metro Centre on the market, Sam Fender available on a free & UK gold have agreed a nominal fee for Auf Wiedersehn Pet This is a club on the brink but fans have been sportswashed into thinking all is rosy

Your school risk assesses a trip to the park. A science experiment. A sports day. But does it risk assess Ofsted? Your employer has a legal duty to assess any risk to staff health and safety. And we all know what Ofsted does to people. The nationaleducationunion have put

this is why I prefer the term "Check and Consolidate" to "check for understanding." A good practical example is you often see multiple choice or fingers up or whatever used as good practice for "check for understanding." That's true, if that's all you want to do. But it doesn't *prepare* students for the next stage of the lesson, because it doesn't involve them actually doing anything with or verbalising their new knowledge

Checking for understanding isn’t just about helping the teacher decide her next steps; it helps students rehearse and consolidate fragile new learning. When all students think and participate, C4U dissolves the boundary between assessment and instruction. Join me @researchEDBrum

@10ofthose can I ask why you are selling books written by Paul Williams. Given the cover up culture he created it is highly distressing to victims to see his books now being sold.

@ICT_MrP Isupport plans are really tricky. It is hard when they can lead to a formal plan. Solution - be clear and kind with colleagues all the time so A. They get developmental feedback and support as part of normal life B. It isn’t a surprise if a plan is needed at some point.

Is this the biggest scandal in teaching? Support plans being used to bully teachers out of a job?

@MadeUpTeacher1 @adamboxer1 Which is very true. Sadly, not everyone, does these things naturally which is why it is sometimes necessary to put a spotlight on certain aspects of teaching

@TomStockwell @adamboxer1 After 30 years of different terms coming into and out of fashion, I tend to just call it ‘teaching’ 🤷‍♀️

I actually think "adaptive teaching" is a worse term than "differentiation" It's certainly no better

@adamboxer1 I’d say you are being responsive by adapting. But the term is really not important but I’d worry about a teacher who didn’t adapt what they are doing in response to what they know about their class before, during and after a lesson.

@TomStockwell I am reliably told that this is "responsive" teaching rather than adaptive. Which somewhat proves rhe point.

#NUFC x #AVFC 1v1 comparison & combined XI based on probable lineups for today’s game (unbiased): Pope < Martinez 🦁 Miley > Cash 🏁 Botman < Konsa 🦁 Thiaw > Torres 🏁 Hall > Maatsen 🏁 Tonali > Bogarde 🏁 Joelinton < Onana 🦁 Ramsey < Tielemans 🦁 Barnes > Sancho 🏁 Gordon < Rogers 🦁 Woltemade < Watkins 🦁 Some close calls in there, two VERY evenly matched sides on paper. Thoughts? 💭 (Guimaraes would obviously get in this XI over Onana, but he remains a major injury doubt for the match 😩🇧🇷)

@Kazza_belle @ICT_MrP Yes but that’s the limit really. And in schools where you have more than one class per year group this does mean that planning is done in silo. When I was a new teacher, I really benefited from planning with more experienced colleagues during PPA.

@TomStockwell @ICT_MrP It can be made more flexible! Some schools won't let their teachers have PPA at home. Why? A school near me, the teachers work 9/10 days at school and have 1 WFh day (ppa). They might use that day for other stuff but work still gets done! It can be more flexible!

On Loose Women today they were talking about teachers having a bit more flexibility despite the holidays. We’re living in a world where more and more jobs are hybrid, flexible and built around real life. Teaching is one of the few professions that hasn’t moved with the times.

Newcastle fans following me, I’m curious… Are you Eddie Howe in or Eddie Howe out? I’ve seen a fair bit of chatter saying that fans are turning on him, is that the case? If so, I’d be genuinely interested to know why. It’s always better to ask those who watch every week.

@TomStockwell It was a complete shambles with schools from the Isle of Wight to the north. I worked with a small group in Birmingham area. We had some success in helping to improve and some that were dreadful are now outstanding. I worked with the schools - not the academy as such.
