Flies are enormously important as decomposers & recyclers, and are vital for food chains: numerous birds, bats & fish depend on them. Another role is becoming increasingly recognised: their contribution to myiophily, that is, pollination by flies. Blog @ scottishpollinators.wordpress.com

In Athayde's latest blog ... Gardeners with small patches of land to work on may question whether their efforts make a difference in promoting biodiversity and helping pollinators. The answer to both questions is 'yes'. Read @ scottishpollinators.wordpress.com

@Kedar_devkota Congratulations on this great work Kedar - it's an important baseline for understanding and conserving pollination services in Nepal

@StevenFalk1 @royalsociety @nicktew95 @Buzz_dont_tweet @savebutterflies @BumblebeeTrust @JeffOllerton @DaveGoulson @NaturalEngland @DefraNature @CFEonline @TonyJuniper @FarmWildlifeUK Thanks Steven! Couldn't agree more on these suggestions. There's still not enough focus on the TIMING of floral resources in pollinator conservation. Early flowering trees/shrubs like the ones you mention give a lot more bang for their buck that standard spring/summer flowers

@TomTimberlake92 @royalsociety @nicktew95 Great study Tom et.al. We need more incentives for creating spring blossom sequences in farmland (esp use of Prunus cerasifera & Salix caprea in early spring) & for encouraging late-blooming arable margins/grassy areas + Ivy after July hay-cutting/margin-mowing.

Gardens reduce hunger gaps for farmland pollinators! 🏡🐝 In early spring & late summer rural gardens produce 50-95% of farmland nectar, throwing pollinators a crucial lifeline. More in our @royalsociety paper with @nicktew95 and Jane Memmott: doi.org/10.1098/rspb.2… and in🧵👇

7. We show that >90% of farmland in GB is within 1km of a garden, and therefore accessible to mobile pollinators like bumblebees. So positive actions by gardeners can have far-reaching benefits. For the 27 million gardeners in the UK - you can all make a big difference!

Nanoplastics uptake to organisms isn't only about exposure concentrations, but also variable biological traits should be considered. Check out more in our recently published manuscript: link.springer.com/article/10.118…
