From the moment I got to ASU, I had a mentor, Jessica Pye. We’d chat on a scheduled Zoom call every two weeks. Or I’d text her freaking out about my comprehensive exams. On these calls, we’d sometimes chat about research or not. Kids, politics, her travel with her husband…

I’ve been thinking about her lately. I’ll be entering the job market and feel confused about, well, a lot of things lol She’d be the one I know I could just call. So yeah, weird feeling. She was just overall a great person

It was a relationship I really valued because she saw me on a human level as opposed to what I can produce. Then one day we chatted, later I hear she’s on medical leave, and then suddenly no longer here. This was a year ago.

One of my favorite assistant professors here at ASU is often the most constructively critical and always asks the tough but great questions. Going to pitch it to him to see if I have something

I get to my class at least 2 hours before each session, mostly because I like to take final notes, go over the lecture, etc. Without fail, there’s always at least one student who shows up an hour before to talk and mostly not* about the class. I love it 👨🏿‍🏫 #phdchat

My tweet in Aug 2023 (personal account): “I feel like any type of AI regulation should initially prioritize the type of data companies and able to collect and keep.”

🔥 BREAKING: New privacy lawsuit against OpenAI filed by a resident of Florida, FULL OF strong statements and allegations. Important quotes below: "Together with Defendants’ scraping of our digital footprints—comments, conversations we had online yesterday, as well as 15 years ago—Defendants now have enough information to create our digital clones, including the ability to replicate our voice and likeness and predict and manipulate our next move using the technology on which the Products were built. They can also misappropriate our skill sets and encourage our own professional obsolescence. This would obliterate privacy as we know it and highlights the importance of the privacy, property, and other legal rights this lawsuit seeks to vindicate" (page 7) - "OpenAI’s sudden shift to a profit focus and alignment with Microsoft, a corporate giant with a vested interest in curating and dominating a commercial market for AI, marked the beginning of the end of OpenAI’s commitment to humanity. The company began to pursue profits at the expense of privacy, security, and ethics, beginning with its data collection" (page 14) - The integration of ChatGPT technology into Microsoft’s primary products significantly magnifies existing data privacy concerns. This move effectively enables the collection of consumer information across a wide array of systems and platforms, encompassing a comprehensive range of user interactions. The resultant collation of expansive consumer data contributes to the construction of extensive user profiles. (page 26) - Another reason users retain privacy interests in their personal data on the internet, even when it is technically ‘public,’ is the reasonable expectation of “obscurity” i.e., “the notion that when our activities or information is unlikely to be found, seen, or remembered, it is, to some degree safe.” Privacy experts note users’ reasonable expectation that most of the Internet will simply ignore their individual posts. Moreover, “[t]he passage of time also makes information obscure: no one remembers your MySpace pictures from fifteen years ago" (page 53) - It's great to see so many topics of the Bootcamp being discussed in practice here. I especially recommend reading from page 73, where you can find the list of alleged violations. Read the full class action lawsuit below.

Overall, there should be far less concern regarding AI itself, and much more concern regarding how human actors use AI that results in societal/ individual harm. Partly what my PhD is about

Fixing to share my research idea with some co-authors. I have no idea if it’ll work but if it does…

Imagine Zoom/ Teams meetings across different countries. Or the integration a future version of Google glasses. Bridging the language gap in real time can open so much possibilities

This is wild. Somebody posted an adorable video, a commenter tagged the profile below and they converted the language from English to Portuguese using AI. Further development of this type of tech can make the world a much smaller place
