"even a good man can and should hate public enemies, not out of personal vengeance, but as far as and to the extent that the safety of the Christian Republic requires, and there is a just cause for this hatred according to God's word." Lambert Daneau

Interesting that Lambert Daneau, in the 1590s, argues for declarations of independence and the use of violence to defend the newly established republic. "A part of the kingdom may choose a particular king for itself or a new form of the republic, abandoning the rest of the body to which it previously adhered, whenever either the public and manifest welfare of that part wholly advises it, or when the fundamental laws of the country are not observed but obstinately violated by those who reign, or when the true worship of God and His command plainly dictated and demand that it be done. From these causes, the part of the kingdom that has made the choice can defend the prince or new form of the republic it has approved with arms, not only against foreigners but also against other parts of the same kingdom from which it has separated and departed. For it is right to fight for this cause (2 Sam. 2:11)."

Christian Politics by Lambert Daneau is coming soon, DV. This will be the first book from Tomos Press, a new press dedicated to curated texts from across the Western tradition. Lambert Daneau (c. 1530–1595) was a French Huguenot theologian, jurist, and pastor. His Christian Politics is an important source for Protestant political thought and the development of early modern political theory.
