The gateman in my compound is paid 30,000 Naira a month. For that amount, he is expected to man the gate, wash cars, clean the compound, and pump water. When I moved in, I found this arrangement absolutely ridiculous. He recently had a confrontation with a tenant’s wife who demanded to know why her car hadn’t been washed. When he calmly explained that washing cars wasn't part of his original job description, she flared up. I have advocated for an upward review of his salary several times, but the other tenants have consistently opposed it. The irony is incredible. We condescendingly call these men "common gatemen," underpay them, and still expect optimal performance at all times. Yet, the moment that "common gateman" isn't there to do the work, we suddenly realize how tedious and essential those jobs actually are. We need to start treating these people with the dignity they deserve. We shouldn't just appreciate them because they make our lives easier—we should do it because, technically, our safety is in their hands.

For the first time in 2 years, our compound gate man travelled. Just two days. And everywhere has scattered. Normally the man does everything. Open gate. Pump water. Fuel the generator. Wash cars. We didn’t even realize how much work he was doing until he left. Yesterday morning, water finished from the tank. Everybody came outside looking confused. Nobody even knew where the water switch is. Later we contributed money to buy fuel for the generator. Then someone asked, “Who will go and buy the fuel?” Silence. Nobody moved. Last night I came back home without my key. I knocked and banged the gate for almost 45 minutes. Nobody opened. This morning I even had to wash my own car. First time in years. Then the waste disposal people came. Nobody attended to them. They just dropped the waste and left. Omo… Only two days without our gate man and this compound has completely lost direction. It’s going to be a very long week for all of us.

I need Christians to take a seat and understand what I'm about to say. You're not meant to enjoy praise or worship. You could enjoy worshipping God and be in awe of Him. Or rejoice in His presence. But understand that the praise or worship is for God. He is the only receiver, the only audience. He deserves the full benefits of that praise. That's why Jesus said the true worshippers will worship Him in Spirit and in truth. In many events, programs and meetings, people vibe and claim to be praising/worshipping God. Turning that song into alujo has stripped it of the depth. The focus will be on the beat, not the lyrics.
Noah SULAIMON@okikiayo11

Must every single song become Alujo? 😭😭 The boss will soon sing their own and change lyrics.

Everytime we host events, we screen the quality of people who have access and hold mics to our speakers and guests. It's ridiculous that someone this tacky and disorganized should be holding a mic to Omotola's mouth. There's a reason media outlets send some of their finest to cover red carpet at top events. There's a reason journalists also dress up, beat their face up and prepare for red carpet coverage. There are standards to these things and we have to bring it back. We can't throw standard away just because anyone can now hold a mic. Celebrities are humans too and this messy attempt at an interview should typically piss anyone off.

On a red carpet, you introduce celebrities yourself, you don’t hand the mic to them to introduce themselves. It’s not a panel session where people are there to tell their stories. Even with guests who aren’t celebrities, introducing them instantly elevates them and sets the tone. This is because it shows you’re in control, helps the audience immediately know who they’re looking at, keeps the flow smooth and lively, and just makes the whole moment feel more polished and important.

Biola Adebayo doesn't think baba ijesha was guilty of the crime, that was why she went to visit him in prison, also heard she persuaded him to come on her show to come say his side of the story. Saw videos and other evidences and still concluded that man was wronged, a terrible human.

OPEN COUNTRY MAG
OPEN COUNTRY MAG@OpenCountryMag·
On the night of February 14, 2026, one of the most celebrated voices in African speculative fiction nearly lost his life — and came within inches of permanent paralysis. Oghenechovwe Donald Ekpeki (@Penprince_) — the first African-born Black author ever to win a Nebula Award, and a winner of the World Fantasy Award, British Fantasy Award, and two Nommo Awards — was struck by an out-of-control delivery vehicle while walking near Reddington Hospital in Ikeja, Lagos. The rider slammed into him at full speed, launching him into the air and onto the pavement, then continued forward and struck the woman walking beside him before finally stopping. When doctors finally examined him — after a nine-hour ordeal without medical attention — they delivered alarming news: Ekpeki had sustained a spinal fracture. The orthopaedic surgeon told him plainly that had the injury been even slightly worse, he would have faced permanent paralysis, lifelong deformity, or chronic debilitating pain. Ekpeki’s publishers are currently raising are raising $3,000 to help cover his immediate medical expenses and support him through his recovery period. You, too, can help Ekpeki get better by donating. gofundme.com/f/help-oghenec…
