I have completed my evaluation of Jared Jones. Here’s what I’ve got: - 24 years old - 6 ft 210 lbs - Drafted 44th overall in 2020 - MLB debut in 2024 This guy is a bulldog with swagger. That combo doesn’t grow on trees. Skenes AND Jones? The Pirates may have hit the jackpot twice. Jones opened the game with 3 straight 100 mph fastballs. Then he struck out the side. Ended with 9 Ks on the road against Cleveland. This after 6 innings of perfect baseball before the All Star Break. At 24 years old. We have a real fucking problem on our hands folks. No buttons. No chains. All chest hair. All dawg… The Pirates better not fuck this up.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have won 4 games in a row. It’s been awhile since we’ve been back here but yes, I’m still going. Welcome to Day 5 of Ladder the Jolly.

For the MLB National League pennant outright, the Pittsburgh Pirates (+5000) are an very small intriguing dart throw within a field that's lacking dominant juggernaut level teams outside of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Any argument against the Dodgers has to begin with their proficiency across the board: Hitting: AVG: .262 (2nd) Runs: 506 (3rd) HR: 127 (5th) OBP: .343 (1st) OPS: .777 (1st) Pitching: ERA: 3.55 (3rd) Quality Starts: 53 (1st) Strikeouts: 866 (6th) WHIP: 1.14 (1st) Simply put, the Dodgers between a lineup featuring Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts, Max Muncy, Andy Pages and Kyle Tucker and a rotation headlined by Yoshinobu Yamamoto with Shohei Ohtani starring on both ends is as close to a baseball super team as we've seen. Yet, there's injuries scattered amongst the rotation (Tyler Glasnow, Blake Snell) and some signs of age in the lineup that might not show up in a 162 game season but which could play a factor in a playoff series. Now, we get to the Pirates: Hitting: AVG: .263 (1st) Runs: 516 (2nd) HR: 125 (6th) OBP: .342 (2nd) OPS: .768 (2nd) Pitching: ERA: 4.32 (20th) Quality Starts: 32 (14th) Strikeouts: 883 (4th) WHIP: 1.32 (17th) While they lack the names on the back of the Dodgers jerseys, Bryan Reynolds (.283/.400/.878, 14 HR), Brandon Lowe (.246/.316/.803, 21 HR), Ryan O'Hearn (.288/.351/.838, 16 HR) and others have turned what was a bottom tier offense into one of the league's best. As well, further boosts to an already dangerous offense exist via health as the star potential of Konnor Griffin (.276/.332/.736, 5 HR in 59 GP) and Oneil Cruz (.264/.350/.822, 14 HR in 64 GP) who will be joining their team in the second half of the season. While their bullpen is among the worst in baseball (4.48 ERA, 1.42 WHIP), it's hard not to consider them capable of toppling a giant in the national league with a few bounces when they possess NL Cy Young award winner Paul Skenes (8-8, 3.57 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 130 K in 108.1 IP) and all-star Braxton Ashcraft (9-3, 3.49 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 128 K in 113.1 IP) at minimum in a series with the wildcard talents of Jared Jones (1-1, 4.37 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 39 K in 35 IP) and Bubba Chandler (3-8, 4.77 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, 85 K in 94.1 IP) who have the raw stuff to morph into a impactful third starter in a series and who both have pitched well in the past month and a half. It's a team that would have to ride the consistency of Skenes and Ashcraft series over series, but also one that could decide to patch together a better bullpen at the trade deadline with plenty of arms available. In the end though, as we've seen with players such as Madison Bumgarner, Chris Carpenter and others, sometimes a dominant starter can be enough to spark a meaningful run in the postseason. Overall, it wouldn't be shocking to see this team fail to make the playoffs with the issues/inconsistency in their bullpen and back end of the rotation, but it's one that if present within the field in October has the starting pitching and hitting to make a run in a similar fashion to what we've seen recently from teams such as the 2023 Arizona Diamondbacks and Texas Rangers and 2025 Toronto Blue Jays. #gambitgemfutures #gamblingtwitter
