There are landlords right now, adding VAT to rent and blaming it on the new tax code. I had to intervene in a recent case by making the tenants know that RENT for residential apartments is VAT EXEMPT. It is only applicable in commercial properties. I advised the tenants to pay their rent exclusive of VAT and if the landlord insist, they should demand for his TIN/VAT Registration number and collectively write to the NRS to ask for a refund. While their chances of a cash refund is low, writing to the NRS at least notifies the agency of an infraction of the NTA by the landlord. The next day, the landlord to the tenants to ignore the letter, that the inclusion of VAT on rent was an error. Yeah Right! It appears to me that in order to protect Nigerians from being exploited by others, many of us will have to assume the role of Community Watch Men and Women of the New Tax Code.
