NEW, w/ @natalaroche: The Florida Constitution requires charter schools to have oversight from elected school boards. But soon Miami Dade College will start doing that work, transferring elected local control to the governor's appointees. wlrn.org/government-pol…

@TooMuchMe Long before Brightline was an actual train a USDOT official once asked me if I knew anything about it - she said its lobbyist had practically moved into the DOT building, everyone was confused.

Florida is gifting (free) some of the most valuable land in the state to President Trump for a presidential library -- and hotel. It's worth over $67 million + was owned by Miami Dade College. Former school pres Padrón calls the gift "unimaginable." wlrn.org/government-pol…

'Killer Train.' In S. Florida, there's a shiny commuter train running from Miami to Ft. Lauderdale & West Palm, then up to Orlando. Brightline. Hailed as an antidote to S.Fla's crippling traffic. One problem: Brightline kills someone every 13 days. —> miamiherald.com/news/local/art…

Actually laughing out loud that someone thinks I am anti-rail. And about that second part about Florida not giving any money for grade separation or other things - factually incorrect. More reporting to follow.
Hayden@the_transit_guy

@oevans82 You can and should believe all that, and you can also believe that this is an anti-rail hit piece in a state that won't give a single dollar to Brightline to make grade separations a thing.

We worked on this investigation for a year. If you think you know this story -- you don't. Also - there is a podcast. Search for "Killer Train" on your podcast app or by clicking here: wlrn.org/podcast/killer…

NEW: @MiamiHerald / @WLRN investigation reveals 182 people have been struck and killed by Brightline trains. While key safety measures are delayed, Brightline remains the deadliest passenger train in U.S. We compared with other railroads to explain why. miamiherald.com/news/local/art…

@MissionMiamiPC @downtownMIA More than anything I feel like what is ripe for debate is about the fact that no residents are on the board. That's .. very far from ideal. At the same time, so many residents would likely never have moved downtown if it wasn't for years of YEARS of the DDA's work in the area.

NEW: We found that Miami-Dade has been in breach of a federal court settlement for almost 3 years -- which should protect some jail inmates from being handed to ICE. Meanwhile, the mayor is asking permission to tour Krome - where many are being sent. wlrn.org/immigration/20…
