They teach their children that America won World War II. Which is, and this is important, not technically false but is also a form of organized forgetting. History gets curated to produce a specific psychological output: we are the people who save the world. This narrative, repeated for eighty years, produces citizens who experience American power as inherently benevolent by historical nature. And those citizens then cannot understand why anyone resists it.

There is a type of person in every formerly colonized country who is more offended by anti-American rhetoric than by the things America has done. He finds the rhetoric embarrassing. Unsophisticated. Emotionally driven. He prefers "nuance." He prefers "complexity." He prefers to acknowledge that yes, American foreign policy has flaws, but we must also consider China, must also consider domestic governance failures, must also consider the difficulty of international relations. He is always more comfortable with the people in the room when he says this. He is always making the empire's argument in the empire's preferred register: measured, credentialed, context-aware. What he has actually done is import the framework that makes American power's crimes discussable only within limits that never reach accountability. He has learned to critique in a way that produces no critique that matters. This is not stupidity. He was rewarded for this his entire educational life. The fellowship. The publication. The speaking invitation. The interview. All of it came when he was measured. All of it was withheld when he was not. He learned the lesson completely. The lesson was the product.

A country that has been bombed by America knows what America is. A country that has been sanctioned into poverty by America knows what America is. A country whose elected government was overthrown by American intelligence knows what America is. Only American citizens, sitting inside the country that did all of this, remain genuinely uncertain about what America is. This is not a coincidence. This is the one information environment on earth that was designed, resourced, and sustained specifically to prevent that knowledge from becoming normal. Hollywood. Textbooks. The nightly news. The "national interest" frame that converts every act of imperial violence into a defensive response to external threat. The most sophisticated propaganda operation in history was never aimed at the enemy. It was aimed at home.

@SweeneySteve Also a reminder (if one is needed) that only last month Israel killed a priest in Lebanon. Fr. Pierre El-Rahi was killed as he sought to assist parishioners whose house had been fired upon by an Israeli tank. When he rushed to the house to help, the tank struck the house again.
