@Toronto_History It wouldn’t be officially named “Bytown” until long after his death! “By” is an old Anglo-Saxon word for town, as in bylaws. so Bytown is a double name, like chai tea or naan bread.

On this date in 1849, William Lyon Mackenzie was burned in effigy by a crowd of “lewd fellows of the baser sort” outside the house where he was staying. Mackenzie had been permitted to return to Toronto after an amnesty for the 1837 Rebellion.

A memorial quilt called Breaking Ground was created by artist Laurie Swim depicting the five men in the tunnel. After being displayed at City Hall, the quilt would be permanently installed at York Mills station on the 50th anniversary of the disaster.
