I had a feeling that my thoughts that were shared yesterday might cause some misunderstanding in the point trying to be made. So, I'll expand a bit further now to hopefully provide more clarity but there could still be disagreement.
I'd like to start with a definition of positional play - "It (positional play) is a style of play that focuses on creating and exploiting space and superiorities by manipulating the opposition team’s movement and positioning." This was taken from an article by @TotalAnalysis.
In my opinion, the definition illustrates the holistic nature of positional play. That is why, as I previously mentioned, positional play does essentially encompass most, if not all, football tactics. However, positional play is often viewed through the lens of Guardiola's interpretation (image 1). But that's just a route to interpreting the broad definition of positional play, in my opinion.
Often, when relational football is discussed, there is a focus on orientation with the teammates and the ball. There's also an emphasis on connections. However, as the detailed model in image 2 shows (taken from @Tactx_), the references of the ball and the teammate are considered when coaching positional play along with the opponent and space. Further, there is a focus on building connections.
Therefore, in my opinion, relational football, Guardiola's interpretation of JDP, and almost, if not all coaching philosophies, fall under the umbrella of positional play. The differences lie in how coaches adjust their team's mobility, distances, and tempo, as shown in image 3 by @MeiaArmador__. So, the style can differ on which trade-offs the coach is willing to take.
I also would like to clarify that this is just a difference in how we interpret positional play rather than relationism. I think that positional play is a much broader term than what many think of it to be. Anyway, interesting discussion. Intrigued to hear more thoughts on this.

@ground_guru @fahdahmed987 @sport_simon If you want to label Fernando Diniz’s Fluminense a positional play team, then I would not take the analysis seriously. Saying Relationism (non zonal attack) is a branch/subset of positional play (zonal attack), is like saying M2M (non-zonal defence) is a subset of zonal defence.

Villarreal’s La Liga Rise: Structure, Clarity, and Consistency 🇪🇸 ⚽
While European results haven’t told the full story, Villarreal CF has quietly built one of the most consistent campaigns in La Liga this season. Sitting in the top four and competing with Atlético Madrid, their domestic performances reflect a team with clear ideas and strong tactical identity.
Under Marcelino García Toral, Villarreal have leaned into a model that prioritises structure, balance, and efficiency. They don’t rely on chaos or constant risk — instead, they control games through organisation and well-defined roles across all phases. ⚡
One of the biggest strengths has been their ability to remain compact without the ball. Distances between lines are well managed, central spaces are protected, and opponents are often forced into predictable areas. This allows Villarreal to defend with control and then attack with purpose once possession is regained.
In possession, the approach is direct but calculated. Rather than overcomplicating build-up, Villarreal looks to progress quickly into advanced areas, using width and forward runs to stretch defensive lines. The intention is clear: arrive in dangerous zones with numbers and create situations where second balls and rebounds can be attacked aggressively. 🎯
What stands out most is the consistency of their approach across matches. Even when games become uncomfortable, the structure remains intact. Players understand their roles, movements are coordinated, and the team rarely loses its shape for long periods.
That clarity has been key in a league as competitive as La Liga. Week after week, Villarreal have shown they can manage different game states, adapt to opponents, and still impose their core principles. 💥
With momentum on their side and a strong domestic foundation, the question now is how far this structure can take them and whether they can translate this La Liga consistency into bigger stages moving forward.
