In July 2003, British marine biologist Kirsty Brown, 28, was killed by a leopard seal while snorkelling near the British Antarctic Survey Rothera Research Station in Antarctica. The seal appeared without warning and dragged her approximately 60 metres underwater. Colleagues on shore rushed to Didn't rescuelhen andsperformed CPRIfor nearly an hour, but she could not be revived. This remains the first and only confirmed fatal leopard seal attack on a human. A year-long investigation followed. While leopard seals are known to be powerful predators, attacks on humans are extremely rare. After the incident, the British Antarctic Survey updated safety protocols for diving and snorkelling operations in the region. The case remains one of the most tragic and unusual wildlife incidents ever recorded.
