@SKillous Well, I've never been a fan ef Discord anyway, but maybe this incentivises people to use a different app. (It won't, but one can dream, right?)

@TrAiDoS Sure, if you don't pay you are a product. But Google and such don't make a yearly recap in this way: "hey, look this is the info we sold about you to a third party, how cool is that".

I find discord "wrapped" to be something very disturbing. Even if you opt out, they still collect and store your data via users who didn't. Crazy that they even thought of releasing such feature.

A #study found that "encountering... [immersive] game environment, [players]... become fully immersed in the game world, enhancing their loyalty to the #game." Spending time in-game = increased chance to spend money.

Our search for status expands into the realm of #gaming. We want to be perceived as better, stronger... more valuable than others. Our in-game rank, character gear, card collection... all things we deem important. These are reasons why we keep playing #videogames.

@ChaunceyGardner Do you think this includes guidance and quarterly earnings reports? I personally don't due to their legal obligation and also accuracy in guidance and actual numbers reported the quarter/year after.

Did you know that The United States #FDA has issued warnings to companies selling vaping products that look like toys, as they may attract youth to nicotine use. Some companies have started producing #vaping devices that are fully functional video games.

Do you know what the Computer vision syndrome (CVS) is? It's a condition where the eye muscles aren't capable of relaxing from the constant tension required to focus on a monitor. That being said, look away from your monitor from time to time, and take care of your eye health.

@ChaunceyGardner Makes sense. However, data from the CDC, NIH, and papers, are lagging (sometimes years). Quarterly results are better in that sense and include guidance, which let's you look ahead. I think you're leaving out a valuable data source not doing it. Companies move move money.

@TrAiDoS I look at their Quaterly reports to investors. I don't get paid by them. I spend far more time reading CDC and NIH survey reports. And peer-reviewed academic (non-industry) publications. I honestly don't give a sh*t about any particular company.

@DaJanTRO 🤔 Good question. From the management literature we know that big companies with high turn-over rates don't do that well. So I'd say that the effect stays, depending on the relative (%) number of changing members.

#Gaming & #esports #science fact: Teams with minimal to no changes of their team composition (members) decline in performance over time, while teams that have a constant chance in members improve with repetition.

@TrAiDoS ...and I was just pointing out that all the non-profit organizations that agree with you are really just Big Tobacco's little helpers. This should give you reason to pause and, perhaps, rethink. If Big Tobacco wants something, that thing MAY not be good for public health.

@ChaunceyGardner Tbh, you've lost me. We went from companies target teens my having toy-like devices, and number of users dropping, to some sort of moral discussion about whether it's right or wrong and lobbying.

The two biggest Big Tobacco companies in America (you mentioned one) have been lobbying state lawmakers, pushing something called "Registry Bills." These restrict the market the tiny handful of 11 devices FDA has authorized. Big Tobacco claims that's to protect teens, but in fact it's to remove their competitors, so-called "illegal Chinese vapes" that they've told their own investors undermine cigarette sales. NOTHING is as it seems in tobacco control. VERY few teens use the products Big Tobacco wants gone. 13.6 million adults use them daily or some day vs. 0.9 millioin teens who use them "at least one time in the past 30 days," and 0.2 million teens who may use them daily. These registry bills will push millions of adults back to smoking deadly cigarettes. Guess who ALSO pushes for those bills? The Truth Initiative, Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids and Parents Against Vaping E-cigarettes (PAVE). This is standard Baptist and Bootlegger behavior. NOTHING is as it seems...

@ChaunceyGardner Not sure why you're adding morals and emotions to a rational conversation. I never said tah I blame anybody or any company. However, I can understand that the topic is close to your heart.

@TrAiDoS 2.3% of US teens vape nicotine frequently (20 or more days per month). You blame the companies. 7.8% of teens binge drink causing 4,000 teen deaths every year. Do you place as much blame on alcohol companies as you do on vape firms and tobacco companies?

@ChaunceyGardner Not sure about that. Companies such as $MO (Altria) have a margin of ~50% in a billion dollar industry. Meaning, they got money to spend. And if only a small percentage transitions or starts to smoking, especially at a young age, they likely got a customer for life.

The US market is >40 million legal adults with a demonstrated willingness to pay. The >40m who smoke or vape. The teen “market” is 0.6 million illegal teens-on-allowances who vape frequently (so routinely buy). It would be crazy to waste finite marketing dollars on this tiny and shrinking teen market.

@ChaunceyGardner Ok, smoking in adults dropped. But what does that have to do with teens/young adults having vaping/vaped a lot, and a good percentage of them having switched to smoking?

@TrAiDoS Among all US adults, the age group with the steepest rate of smoking decline by far is young adults. Teen smoking “mysteriously” dropped 90% over the past decade to near nil (a 50-year low). Vaping clearly is NOT a gateway to smoking.

@ChaunceyGardner I can affirm you that I'm not a wall. But there is a big difference between companies targeting young adults and the outcome. Just because you do something doesn't mean it has an effect. Also parts of them, transitioned to smoking. Looks like they, after all, did a "good" job.

Sometimes it feels like I’m talking to a wall. US teen nicotine vaping dropped 70% over the past 5 years to a 10-year low. So, obviously, if they target teens as you clearly want to believe… they’re not very good at it. FYI: if the CEO of a vape firm announced to his/her Board and investors “we’re going to target teens, they’d be cleaning out their desk in 5 minutes. Such a plan would be evil, illegal, and a profoundly stupid and suicidal business strategy.
