Interesting criticism here that D.C. doesn't restrict sex offenders from living near schools, like some states do. That being said, distance-based restrictions (like keeping them 1,000 feet from schools) in a dense and small city like D.C. would be pretty challenging.

Sex offenders who were mandated yet failed to register their residency were arrested by United States Marshals who checked on 883 sex offenders and found 25 not in compliance. Why, however, does Washington, DC not mandate sex offenders stay away from areas frequented by children, like 30 other states and many local jurisdictions require? It is time for DC to protect our most vulnerable! Demand protection for children from sex offenders who reside within 500 to 1000 feet of child friendly areas.

Research done by DOJ showed that imposing residency restrictions on sex offenders based on schools and other child facilities in Newark, New Jersey could leave them with housing options in only seven percent of the city.

Tracy Velázquez, policy director at the Council for Court Excellence (CCE), says the increasing population in the D.C. Jail is an issue because of "ongoing problems with poor conditions and vermin, including rampant cockroaches."

Interesting: Per the @CCE_for_DC, the population in the D.C. Jail's Central Detention Facility has gone up over the last week, which aligns with the increased arrests by federal enforcement officers deployed in the city.
