A roadmap sounds good from the outside, but from a company perspective it’s usually a trap. People treat roadmaps like plans. Communities treat them like indirect promises. The moment you publish features, timelines, or future ideas, expectations lock in. If priorities shift, infrastructure changes, or something takes longer than expected, the conversation instantly becomes: “you said this was coming.” Even when the change was the correct decision. A roadmap rarely creates upside for the company itself. Most of the time it creates pressure, artificial deadlines, and future backlash for deviating from an early snapshot of ideas. Building products requires flexibility. Roadmaps reduce flexibility the moment they become public.
