Dear @srntorg Community, Have you been wanting to meet with colleagues outside your immediate circle? Perhaps get some advice about your research and career path? The SRNT Health Equity Network, the Policy Research Network, the Treatment Research Network, and the Basic Science Network are pleased to announce our mentoring initiative It’s Just Coffee to facilitate these professional interactions. This program will involve a one-time virtual or in-person meeting over coffee (or other non-alcoholic beverages of your choice) during, or shortly after, the 2024 SRNT Annual Meeting in Edinburgh. ​​This year we are introducing four tracks: · The Health Equity track (hosted by the SRNT Health Equity Network) · The Policy Research track (hosted by the SRNT Policy Research Network) · The Treatment track (hosted by the SRNT Treatment Research Network) · The Basic Science track (hosted by the SRNT Basic Science Network) What is the health equity track? The goal of the health equity track is to match mentors who are engaging in health equity or health disparities research with mentees interested in health equity or health disparities research, and/or who identify with a systematically marginalized population. What is the policy track? The goal of the policy research track is to match mentors who are working in the area of policy research with mentees who are working in or are interested in policy research. What is the treatment track? The goal of the treatment track is to match mentors working in tobacco treatment research positions with mentees interested in advice on career and research matters related to the treatment of tobacco use and dependence. What is the basic-science track? The goal of the basic science track is to match mentors who are basic scientists in the nicotine and tobacco field with mentees that are currently invested in or are interested in basic science research. Who are the mentees? Mentees are trainees (such as graduate students and postdocs), early-career individuals, or individuals at any career stage who would like to transition into health equity/disparities, policy research, and/or basic science areas. I am interested in being a mentee! Who are the mentors? Mentors are postdocs, assistant professors, associate professors, or full professors/senior-level researchers who kindly volunteered to serve as mentors. You can find the mentor list on the member side of the SRNT website. If you are a SRNT member, please follow the listed steps: 1. Sign in to your SRNT account at: srnt.org 2. Select ‘Members Only’ option at the top of the page. 3. Select ‘Networks’, followed by ‘Network’, and select the network of interest (Health Equity, Policy Research, Treatment Research, or Basic Science) What if you are not a member of SRNT and cannot access the member side of the SRNT website? · To request the mentor list for the Health Equity Track: Email Sam Cwalina at sn.cwalina@gmail.com. · To request the mentor list for the Policy Research Track: Email Gus White at whiteam25@vcu.edu. · To request the mentor list for the Treatment Track: Email Michael Celestin (mceles@lsuhsc.edu) or Eli Klemperer (elias.klemperer@med.uvm.edu) · To request the mentor list for the Basic Science Track: Email Jibran Khokhar (jibran.khokhar@schulich.uwo.ca) or Brandon Henderson (hendersonbr@marshall.edu). I have identified potential mentors. What should I do next? Let us know who you would ideally like to be matched with by March 4, 2024 at 5 pm Eastern Time (we cannot accommodate late requests). Email the contact person for your chosen track with the following information: 1. Your name, position, and affiliation 2. I submitted my requests. What’s next? We will do our best to match you with a mentor prior to the annual meeting, but we cannot guarantee that you will be paired up. It all depends on the number of mentee requests and the number of available mentors. We will look at all the requests and notify you whether or not you were assigned a mentor. We will do our best to assign you to one of the three mentors you requested but cannot make this guarantee. We may also consider matching you with a mentor who was not listed in your top three and will do our best to match you on common research interests or relevant career trajectory. If you are matched with a mentor, we will email you and your assigned mentor in a single email. If we are unable to match you, we will email you to let you know. After your meeting with your mentor, we will ask you to complete an online program evaluation form. Happy speed-mentoring!
