When Mayor-elect Mamdani takes office, he will control over 6,300 miles of streets throughout the five boroughs. Reducing car dependence is one of the best ways to reduce costs for New Yorkers. Owning a car costs nearly $9,000 annually, while taking transit costs just $1,500.

By the time New York’s Citi Bike launched six years after Vélib’, Paris would already have the most shared bikes per capita of any bike share system in the world, with one bike per every 97 Parisians. transalt.org/reports-list/h…

🥖🇫🇷 How a pair of socialist mayors transformed Paris from a congested mess into the pedestrian paradise we know today: First came Mayor Bertrans Delanoë in 2001, who would double the width of most sidewalks, create the Vélib’ bike share system, and scale it up rapidly.

Over the past 20-odd years, Paris has been transformed into the most walkable and bikeable city in the world. What was once a car-choked metropolis is now filled with bike lanes, pedestrianized streets, and trees. Can’t we do the same thing in New York City?

“The COGE panel found that these regulations have allowed non-experts to undermine DOT’s planners and designers, drained city resources with repetitive feedback sessions, and set back desperately needed revamps in a city where roughly 50,000 people are injured” each year.

New Yorkers demanded that the city ditch time-consuming reviews that undermine street safety redesigns while several politicians hoped to cling to their power to delay projects in testimony on Monday before a mayoral government efficiency commission. buff.ly/t7h7THQ

"And the aforementioned Colombian capital is famous for its Ciclovía, which bars cars from more than 75 miles of streets every Sunday all year. That’s every Sunday, not five Saturdays. And nearly four times the mileage." Read about it in Streetsblog: nyc.streetsblog.org/2026/07/10/bum…

We love Summer Streets! And New Yorkers deserve a whole lot more of them. Colombia's capital, Bogotá, organizes 75 miles of car-free streets every week — they call it Ciclovía. We're fighting to bring this model to the five boroughs. We call it: NYCiclovia.

NYC banned private cars on 42nd Street during World Cup games at MetLife. But how much of an effect does this have on bus speeds?

We’re excited to see the return of Summer Streets! It’s past time to extend this beloved program to more streets and more weekends year-round. If other global cities like Bogotá can close dozens of miles of streets every week, New York City can, too.

Busways and bus lanes have tremendous safety benefits. Traffic injuries dropped nearly 60% on 14th Street after NYC DOT installed the busway. When the city added a protected bike lane and bus lane on Third Avenue, injuries declined 28%.

Lots of talk about speeding up NYC’s super slow buses today. So, how many people use the bus? 2.75 million trips daily over 1,600 miles of city streets. NYC buses account for 1/5 of all bus trips in US. Daily use in NYC: more than LA, Chicago, SF and Philadelphia—combined!
