Interesting that Leveson sticks firmly to his recommendation that intermediate court (to hear cases currently heard by judge and jury) should be presided over by a judge and two magistrates....@MagsAssoc @charleshymas @BBCDomC

Leveson recommends increase in the No of defendants who appear on video for their 1st magistrates' court appearance. This would be a disastrous move for defendants' effective participation, for lawyer's ability to communicate with their clients & for Nos on short prison sentences

"A system is currently being trialled in the West Midlands whereby the police notify every defence lawyer about the outcome following arrest and if their client will be appearing in court the next day." The fact this is only worthy of a "trial" highlights the problem we face.
