While the US & Europe ramp up military spending, millions live in poverty. Today, we launch Transition Security Project, investigating how militarisation makes us poorer and less safe amid climate crisis — and what genuine security could look like. 🧵 transitionsecurity.org

Militarised mining in Ontario’s Ring of Fire region could mean ecological risk, land dispossession & ongoing colonial violence for Neskantaga First Nation. Their message is clear: “all attempts to fast-track to the Ring of Fire will fail … Our people will meet you on the land”.

Last week, Defense Sec. Pete Hegseth testified that the 1.5T Pentagon budget will "turn the lights back on in manufacturing towns across this country." But new research with @TransitionSec shows that the ballooning Pentagon budget is not a jobs program. Defense employment has plummeted even as spending has swelled, salaries have dropped, and unionization rates are low.

“As Barnes’s new report points out, the job impacts of military spending have been diminishing over time ... the notion that most jobs in the arms industry pay well and have great benefits is also outdated.” Our recent briefing by @tkbarnes in @Forbes 👇 forbes.com/sites/williamh…

I’m pleased to share my latest report for @TransitionSec: Sunrise After the Blockade. The report argues that cheap solar could help Cuba break free of US energy dominance — and that the world should help pay for it. transitionsecurity.org/sunrise-after-… 1/

“The task ahead is to align public policy with popular will: curbing militarism while delivering the jobs, stability, and public goods that people deserve.”

Lorah Steichen writes for @jacobin on why a warfare state can’t support working people. 👇

While Pentagon budgets have steadily increased in recent years, the arms industry has become more consolidated, more automated, and less labor-intensive. The warfare state is not an effective economic development strategy for working people. jacobin.com/2026/04/milita…
