The handful of trains serving SW Ontario are often full or crowded, better service is needed immediately. The slow pace of action by both levels of government is costing the region jobs and opportunities. lfpress.com/opinion/column…

@TrueCommunities Given a very wide median sufficient for additional shoulder and safety barriers as well as the railway, 7km+ curve radius, and interchanges designed to protect for future construction, HSR can be added without totally rebuilding the highway. Highway 401 has none of those things.

@TransportAction Why can't we use part of the 401 for highspeed rail? Other countries use their expressways at some points for easy land acquisition for HSR.

Could HSR be built down the median of 401? No. Could HSR be built alongside CN? Not reasonably. Those ideas are not novel. They've been considered and ruled out by professional engineers over the past decade. Do we need to keep HSR costs down? Absolutely. thewhig.com/news/changes-t…

✅We need improvements to the existing VIA Rail service, including more service to Brockville, as promised since HFR was proposed in 2015. ❌HSR in the 401 corridor has been rejected before, and wouldn't stop in small cities like Brockville at all. recorder.ca/news/brockvill…

This project has crept back onto the radar, but without any improvement in the proposal. It would still require a significant runway extension into the lake and add a lot of noise to the waterfront. Better intercity rail is needed instead. thestar.com/politics/provi…

@Fortgoose @StephenWickens1 Accusing students, seniors, and middle income working households who’ll benefit from more capacity and more affordable fares (including an affordability mandate that VIA was never given) of being “elites” is a wedge-politics talking point that distracts from real rural issues.

@StephenWickens1 The two MPPs where I live and work in eastern ON both came out as against the project. Some hashtag around “elite train” is used by detractors.

1. Concerns, fears, worries and arguments over Canada's #Alto high-speed rail plan mirror to a stunning degree France's debates in the 1970s, prior to the launch of that country's Train à Grande Vitesse a decade later. Jacob Meunier's 'On the Fast Track' is a fascinating read.
