I loved Brian Armstrong from the moment he walked into my office, but I had already invested in CoinLab, so I didn’t invest at first. But my son, Adam did.
I decided Coinbase would have too long a road to success, so I passed.
Ouch.
I thought retail crypto was too far away, but my son Adam disagreed and wrote Brian his first check.
I followed suit shortly after and got in on the next round.
Coinbase has become a household name and dominates the world of cryptocurrency.
Coinbase now has over 120 million customers who use Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies for commerce, finance, trading, and value storage.
The return from Coinbase alone nearly doubled our entire Draper Associates Fund V.
Brian has been an unwavering north star in Bitcoin and crypto.
His innovation and creativity know no bounds.
The lesson for founders: If the first VC says no... try asking one of their sons or daughters... some call mine the new VC Scions.

We're rolling out a small tweak to boost visibility of your posts to your mutuals (people who you follow back). We noticed this data was missing from the algo and it made your friends appear less in your replies. This resulted in the reply section feeling more like a battleground with people you don't recognize. This should also help clusters form around interests more easily, which many people have asked for.

When I began writing The Second Orbit, one of the first questions I had to answer was the title itself.
In 1984, Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma journeyed to space as India’s first astronaut and became a source of inspiration for an entire generation. As I made my own journey to the International Space Station, I found myself gaining a deeper appreciation of the challenges he must have overcome in a very different era of human spaceflight.
In many ways, I believe he opened the doors of space for an entire nation. More importantly, he brought the idea of space exploration into the imagination of countless young Indians. Through my own mission, my hope was simply to keep that door open for those who will follow.
The Second Orbit therefore felt like a fitting tribute. It is not a title that celebrates being second; it acknowledges a journey that seeks to carry forward what he began.
At the same time, I sincerely hope the title has a very short shelf life. I hope it is soon followed by a third orbit, a fourth, a fifth, and many more—until journeys to space by Indians become not extraordinary milestones, but an enduring tradition.
One of my colleagues at NASA once shared a thought that has stayed with me: “When you reach the top, send the elevator down.” If this book or my journey encourages even one person to take that next step towards space, I will consider that mission accomplished.
