#PathwaysToProgress: Partnering to scale up Graduation with Palash (JSLPS) Trickle Up and Palash (Jharkhand State Livelihood Promotion Society) have been working together since 2015 with the overall goal to strengthen the inclusion and welfare of ultra-poor participants including Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) communities within the framework of National Rural Livelihood Mission (#NRLM) through a replicable intervention model for enabling project participants to graduate out of ultra-poverty through the adoption of a variety of strategies adopted jointly by Palash (JSLPS) and Trickle Up. While previous phases primarily focused on creating livelihood opportunities for ultra-poor households for the purpose of meeting their consumption needs, the most recent phase involved deeper and more qualitative individual input to increase income. This phase has also supported the collective establishment of livelihood activities through coaching and mentoring inputs and required market linkages, thus supporting participants’ upward trajectory through sustained higher income opportunities. Participants comprising 300 households - belonging to Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) in Litipara of Pakur district, were organised to form from 15 Micro Enterprise Groups (MEGs), through Trickle Up's direct implementation with support from local partner Pravah. This direct intervention encompassed a multi-pronged approach and a suite of activities including: - Vision building, Formation and handholding of PVTG collectives for coming up with group micro enterprises; - 15 Micro Enterprise Groups were formed engaging 300 PVTG participants in Non-timber Forest Products (#NTFP), agri-produce, livestock and are operational through vision-building exercise; - Capacity building of group enterprise members on enterprise development, management, and market linkage; - Capacity building, coaching and psycho-social mentoring on livelihood diversification, income enhancement, savings and decision-making is ongoing with PVTG women in alignment with the #JSLPS program; - Facilitating #PVTG households for accessing entitlements and social protection programs. Building on the successes and learnings of Project Goal, Trickle Up is now focused on developing a comprehensive design that further addresses the unique challenges faced by PVTGs and the ultra-poor, with a wider and deeper outreach. This will include various dimensions such as livelihood promotion, skill development, social inclusion, and access to essential services at scale. . . . ⚡𝗠𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 women came together to establish women-led group microenterprises by planning, managing, marketing their businesses, enhancing their bargaining power and making more profit 💸 These group enterprises range from collective cultivation and sales to group livestock farming, tent house rentals, leaf plate production, and women-friendly stationery shops 🏪 Requiring minimal time and resources, these ventures provided additional income to meet financial requirements of households 🏡 Project Participants (PPs) received #coaching and training in market negotiation and various soft skills, empowering them to become more proficient entrepreneurs and consequently enhancing their agency 👩‍👩‍👧‍👧 By forming group enterprises, #women are increasing their household incomes, gaining financial independence, and strengthening their communities, ultimately breaking the cycle of #poverty 🙌 . . . Before the introduction of smart cookstoves, ⚡𝗠𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 Participants used 'choolah' - a traditional mud wood-fire stove in their homes. Every one to two weeks, womenfolk would spend hours walking to the nearest forest to gather and carry back enough wood to suffice as fuel for the daily use of their choolah. As part of the ⚡𝗠𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 project, 136 Smart Sakhis have supported 2800 ultra-poor women across 155 villages through mobile #technology 📲 Smart Sakhis provide valuable training and #coaching on various #livelihood activities while helping these women access useful government schemes and entitlements. Additionally, they organize village meetings and collaborate with Community Resource Persons from the Mission Shakti Department to effectively manage Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and facilitate credit linkages. They also offer hands-on support for organizing #DigitalPractice Days, interface meetings, and #nutrition festivals at the gram panchayat level, promoting community engagement and empowerment. ⚡𝗠𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 closes the gender digital divide and connects women to #technology that supports their livelihoods, agency and financial resilience. The PoP Livelihoods app was developed in coordination with Trickle Up India Foundation, TATA Communications and #Jharkhand State Livelihood Promotion Society (Palash - @onlineJSLPS). It provides tools like a money manager, updated farming information and agricultural best practices, and business management tools that are accessible and easy to use for participants. #DigitalInclusion can help rural women transform their #livelihoods by providing access to essential services, financial tools, and educational opportunities.
