“500 vacancies. Millions unemployed. Something in the system is clearly broken.”
Nigeria has millions of unemployed graduates, yet companies like Moniepoint reportedly still struggle to fill hundreds of high-level roles.
That contradiction has sparked a heated debate after Moniepoint’s CEO stated that many Nigerian applicants are not yet qualified to compete at global standards. The statement offended some people, but it also exposed a difficult truth many companies quietly discuss behind closed doors.
Nigeria is not lacking intelligence. Nigerians work at Google, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, Stripe, and some of the biggest companies in the world. The problem is not whether talent exists — the problem is scale and preparedness.
Modern fintech companies require highly specialized professionals:
• Product Engineers
• Data & AI Engineers
• Cybersecurity Specialists
• Product Managers
• Strategic Operations Experts
• Growth Marketers
• Cloud Infrastructure Engineers
These are not roles that depend only on academic certificates. They demand practical execution, systems thinking, communication, adaptability, and the ability to operate in fast-paced global environments.
The uncomfortable reality is that only a relatively small percentage of candidates currently meet those standards consistently.
A realistic estimate of globally competitive talent availability in Nigeria today could look like this:
• Senior Product Engineers → 5–10%
• AI/Data Engineers → 3–7%
• Product Managers → 8–12%
• Growth/Digital Marketers → 15–20%
This is why many companies spend heavily retraining employees after hiring them.
But the criticism against employers is equally valid.
Can companies demand Silicon Valley-level productivity while offering compensation that is nowhere near global standards?
That is where the conversation becomes complicated.
A senior software engineer abroad may earn between $120,000–$250,000 yearly, while many Nigerian companies offer a fraction of that value locally. At the same time, elite Nigerian professionals are increasingly working remotely for foreign companies while living in Lagos, Abuja, or Ibadan and earning in dollars.
This means the best Nigerian talents are no longer competing locally — they are competing globally from home.
As a result, local companies are often left with two difficult options:
1. Pay internationally competitive salaries
2. Build and train talent internally over time
What many organizations want, however, is world-class talent at discounted local-market rates. That is where most of the backlash comes from.
Still, employers are not entirely wrong either.
Many organizations complain about poor communication culture, weak ownership mentality, lack of continuous learning, and shallow technical depth among applicants. Several graduates leave school with theoretical knowledge but limited exposure to practical industry realities.
So both sides are correct.
Nigeria has a talent gap at the elite level.
But Nigeria also has a compensation gap.
You cannot compare workers to global standards without discussing:
• salary structure
• training investment
• healthcare
• tools and infrastructure
• work culture
• long-term incentives
• economic stability
Global standards are built on global systems.
The real issue is not that Nigerians are incapable. The real issue is whether Nigeria has built enough systems capable of consistently producing, retaining, and rewarding world-class professionals at scale.

20 years ago, when Arsenal played in the Champions League final, I was just a teenager, but I felt everything. I cried. I felt sick after the loss… I couldn’t even write my WAEC exam the following day. That’s how much it meant.
Now, 20 years later, I’m in a better place, Arsenal are back in the Champions League final. Same club, same love… but a different ending awaits. This feels poetic. This feels like destiny.
This time, it ends in victory. I love this club ❤️.
