My roommate’s boyfriend needed a place to crash for “just 2 nights.” I said no. Lease only allows 2 occupants and I don’t know him. She asked again. I said, very clearly: “Do not give him a key.” She laughed, made a copy while I was at work, and gave it to him anyway. He moved in. Stayed 6 weeks. Stopped paying rent. Ate my food. Broke my TV. Landlord caught us. Fine + eviction warning: $2,600. Her response? “I didn’t think he’d stay that long.” Then she refused to split the fine. Said I was “being controlling” and “he’s harmless.” My other roommate jumped in immediately. Her logic: “He’s homeless.” “You have a good job.” “Don’t make her choose between you and love.” But it wasn’t about love. I gave her a boundary. She copied the key anyway. So I documented everything + took her to small claims for damages + fine. Judge ruled in my favor. Full $2,600 + moving costs. She still didn’t pay. Now her credit score is wrecked. She had to move back with her parents at 28. And somehow… I’m the one people call heartless. Apparently, in my family, lease agreements are suggestions. But expecting adults to follow housing rules + pay for their guests? That makes me the bad guy.
