The regular Nigerian can’t even afford to buy the dream count in Nigeria. When i wanted to get a copy last year i remember seeing prices from 18k upwards. How many Nigerians can comfortably afford that? Despite that Nigerians still bought over 20k copies.
Innocent@TriumphantJimmy

Chimamanda sold nearly 300,000 copies of Dream Count almost equally split between Europe and America with only around 5000 copies bought in Nigeria. Why should she continue to write for you? She stopped writing for you after HOAYS. Literature is business too.

All your classics in the AWS exist because of the Oyinbo man even after you were independent. Heinemann, not a Nigerian or local publisher was paying Achebe to chair the African Writers Series. 50 yrs later you have no equivalent of Granta, Newyorker, LRB but keep making noise.

@casmiradiepena The culture has what it prioritises and it’s not learning and advancements.

@TriumphantJimmy It's so unfortunate. I wonder what our billionaires, government and elites donate to. We're so talented without any systems to harness and document them.

We should not quote Sebald or be happy we can punctuate well for fear of racists not considering us equals. But you can benefit from MFA, enjoy American phrontisteria and live among those same racists when UI and OAU need you more than Idaho and Utah. You’re a philistine.

@EsomnofuEbelen2 YouTube, I guess. Don’t think it’s on any traditional streaming platform. Interestingly, I saw one of the older versions in Nigeria. I didn’t know it was based on a book then. Then I read the book twenty odd years later and it clicked.😩

Ok. 5000, 10000, 15000. Still a bad outing when you fit for population and compare with markets of comparable size. Especially for your biggest literary star with global celebrity status.

You want to win O. Henry, T.S Eliot Prize, PEN/Faulkner etc. No oyinbo wants to win Chinua Achebe Prize for Literature. But if oyinbo sets up PEN/Soyinka prize for poetry tomorrow to cater to you since you can’t sustain anything of your own, you’ll rush to apply.😁

I think the most shameless Nigerians are the hypocritical MFA bandits who have drunk from the American chalice and live on her largesse but still parrot some form of literary Africanism. They might be worse than Nigerian politicians who don’t pretend to be good.

Young 17yr old boy in Ohio who wants to read Obama’s memoir only needs to sacrifice 2 hours of his KFC pay to buy the book. Same with his counterpart working in Starbucks in Leeds. But to read the memoir of a Nigerian ex- president, you have to spend your monthly minimum wage.

Nigga be sitting in racist America, having benefited from racist American MFA, collecting monthly salary from racist American university and still be yarning about African literary supremacy.😢

@chocoo__latte I’ve admitted that. It was between 5000 and 15000 in Nigeria. My point still stands though.
