An absolutely beautiful article from a column which I have followed for years and always hope that it survives for many more decades- The Speaking Tree in the Economic Times or Times of India. This week's piece was beautifully written- The Linearity of Luck. "There is a quiet assumption most of us carry: that life unfolds in straight lines. Work harder, meet more people, try a little more and outcomes will increase in proportion. But life does not obey straight lines. It behaves more like a river in space: branching, swirling, multiplying—the force in ways that cannot be predicted by addition. What we call luck often belongs to this deeper nonlinear rhythm. Physicist Safi Bahcall describes how systems, whether molecules or human groups, can suddenly shift states when conditions change. Psychologist Richard Wiseman found that luck is less about chance and more about openness. So, luck does not grow linearly; it grows superlinearly. Imagine standing still, doing the same things, meeting the same people, walking the same streets. Your world is a closed circle. Now imagine stepping beyond that circle. A new conversation is not just one new interaction; it is an entry point into another universe of connections, ideas and pathways. "For a seed to achieve its greatest expression, it must come completely undone. The shell cracks, its insides come out and everything changes. To someone who doesn't understand growth, it would look like complete destruction," says Cynthia Occelli. Luck is not a random gift; it is the natural outcome of an open mind. The 'lucky' person is not necessarily more intelligent, privileged or deserving. They are simply more available to people, ideas and subtle invitations that life extends."
