Europe looks like a railway continent on a map. In daily life, it is still a car continent. Almost 80% of passenger travel in the EU is done by car. Rail accounts for just 5.6%. Europe's transport revolution isn't only about building high-speed rail. It's about giving millions of people a real alternative to the car.

The quoted post is a review and critique of the new euro banknote design proposals, themes and selection process as a whole, while in the thread below I will shortly review each proposal individually based on how both sides of the bills together would look as EU-money. Let's go! ⬇️
PanEuropeanMovement@EuropeanPan

Time for an honest review of the new euro banknote design proposals. Overal, my rating would be "not bad", but that applies mostly to the so-called front sides - the back sides are another story, more on that later. After a Europe-wide design contest, 10 designs were selected, based on one of the following two themes: “European culture” and “Rivers and birds”. Sounds good in theory - with a small critical note that the first theme is a lot broader than the second - but there are several problems with it. One of the problems is that the themes got narrowed to 6 specific historical people and 6 specific birds before the public was asked for their opinion. We are thus presented with quite a limited thematic range. I'm glad we get to have a say at all, but more freedom of choice would have been preferable. Also, regarding the 6 people, I understand the need for gender balance, but could they really not find a more fitting female historical figure than a 20th century opera singer who was moreover born in the US? She was beautiful, though, so it's not the worst choice either. Overal the people-side of the banknotes comes of well. The theme “Rivers and birds” would have been better as "Nature and animals", which would have allowed for bears, lynxes, wild horses or European bisons, but on their own merit the bird designs are generally aesthetically pleasing and fitting for banknotes. The general problem with this theme, however, is that it is not instantly recognisable as European. Now for the worst part: the designs on the other side. The propasals are presented with a fixed "front" and "reverse" side, but in practice you are obviously going to see both sides in equal measure. The biggest problem with the "reverse" sides is again of thematic nature. The designers were limited to specific themes here too as the themes came in obligatory pairs, setting the tone for, among other issues, visual disharmony among the two sides. For the bird-designs, it was EU-institutions, the same modernist buildings that are often criticised for their soullessness. The issue here is that it would re-enforce the image of the EU as a distant, faceless bureaucracy instead of a union of nations that share a common overarching civilisation. Still, the designs are mostly well done and and, at the end of the day, one has to admit that putting EU-institutions on EU-money is not the most illogical choice in the world. For the historical figures, the reverse-side theme is much worse. Here, the designers were presented with very specific instructions like "A school or university with a female teacher with young students. There are notebooks and books on the tables" for the €20 and "Adults and children admiring some examples of street art, contemporary art, etc." for the €100. They sound like prompts to create the most generic corporate infomercial art, and unfortunately that is exactly what we get in many cases. In theory there would have still been enough space to turn this into something recognisably European, but there is hardly any sign of that in these designs. It seems like the designers, or at least the ones that made it through, did their utmost to avoid the theme of our current euro notes - European architectural styles - which is a shame. Forcing thematic pairs on the designers has resulted in each of the designs having at least one side that either associates a united Europe with the "Brussel's bureaucracy" for the bird-notes or - for the ones supposedly about "European culture" of all themes! - a side that has nothing European, which is really a missed chance. Nevertheless, if you judge the designs purely on their visual qualities, most of them get a passing grade. Check out the designs below and rate them yourself in the survey and let's make sure to at least eliminate the most dull corporate designs.

Kinda funny that Spain has won 2 world cup finals now, and both are among the ugliest world cup finals of all time, because both times the opposing team decided to try and kick the shit out of the Spanish because they knew they couldn't beat them any other way.
