8 years ago, I started a business as a 19-year-old college student. We served over 30,000 unique customers and I hired over 100 employees in that time. It’s been a lot of fun, but as of today I’m leaving DFI to start a new company: ReallyGoodPicks.com. This post is about the mistakes I’ve made, the lessons I’ve learned over the last 8 years, and what new my venture will look like. My hope is that current and prospective entrepreneurs can learn from my mistakes and avoid making similar ones. First I just want to say if you’re an existing DFI member, please don’t panic. We’re cancelling all subscriptions at DFI so you don’t need to do anything there, and if you still had time left on an active membership I already sent you an email overnight. I sent them one by one from my personal email in an effort to make sure it got to your inbox. If for some reason you didn’t get it, you can DM me and I’ll take care of you. If you haven’t been an active DFI member but you play DFS or bet on sports, I think you’ll want to check out RGP. I’ve made some pretty awesome changes to the content, including my player projections and ownership projections for every slate across NFL, NBA, MLB, PGA, MMA, and CFB. Now let’s get to the lessons I learned over the last 8 years: Utilize part-time employees and contractors whenever you can Giving away equity or hiring full-time employees is tempting because solopreneurship is lonely. I gave away half the equity in my company in the first year so I wouldn’t be going at it alone, and I gave multiple full-time salaries to people I thought I needed. In hindsight, I really just needed mentors and advisors. It’s so much harder to free yourself of equity partners and salaried employees once you no longer want them. Utilizing contractors or part-time employees allows you to stay flexible, which means you can optimize your processes whenever you want. If your product is content, don’t get bogged down in tech. Almost every project will be more time consuming and more expensive than you expect. The best path is to put all your energy towards content, even if that means you deliver it on a pretty basic website. After years of pouring six figures into improving user experience, we raised prices by about 30%, and it backfired. What I learned is that people typically won’t pay more for something because the interface is better. At ReallyGoodPicks, I invested in the only tech project that really matters: making my projections available to the users. You can download them as a CSV file or filter them right on the site by points, team, position, pt/$, etc. Give the customer more of what they want Sounds obvious, but for years I worried that new DFS players would just follow projections to a tee and end up with poorly correlated, duplicated lineups. So I refused to give out my projections. I encouraged new players to make sure they understood game theory and optimal strategies for the specific contests they were playing in before they used projections. However, today’s DFS players don’t need to be coddled. They need the best projections, and I can provide them with that, so I’m finally going to.

Pick 3 😅 I’m so bad at picking who to play that I barely squeaked into the consolation bracket of my league 😂
