I have concerns about @rapeganginquiry. That it is not a statutory inquiry is not one of them. I am clear in my understanding of how we got here. @RupertLowe10 announcing his crowdfunding inquiry mobilised tens of thousands of people. It was another step, a vital step, towards forcing the government to agree to a national inquiry with statutory powers. I have no interest in rewriting history. It does not matter that I have no involvement with his team anymore. I know what happened. I witnessed it. So there is no doubt to my position, any mechanism that forces the cover-up into the open has my support. Whatever its legal form, whatever its limitations. We all must do whatever we can to right this terrible wrong. First and foremost, I am a campaigner. I am not a politician. It is my role to demand more of everyone. My critique does not, nor has ever, come from a place of cheap political point scoring. What concerns me is what is happening inside the political 'right' space itself. People are not stupid. They see it themselves. Score-settling on all sides by people who all know better. Personal grudges should not be run through the machinery of an inquiry into child sexual exploitation. People who see one of the worst institutional scandals in modern British history as a vehicle for political positioning dismays the wider public. This is also doing the government's work for them. The government's version of a national inquiry is inadequate and the case against it needs making, loudly and without distraction. Instead, the people who should be making it are fighting each other. Every week consumed by internal battles is a week the government escapes serious scrutiny. Survivors waited decades while institutions closed ranks around their abusers. Campaigners fought tirelessly whilst not one politician stood alongside them. They deserve better. We all deserve better. The terms of reference of the national inquiry are shambolic.
