Many economists are arguing that export-oriented industrialization is no longer possible. Perhaps the most prominent among them is Dani Rodrik. In his most recent book, he explicitly argues that export-oriented industrialization is no longer viable, primarily due to new automation technologies that undercut the advantage of low-cost labour. I respect Rodrik’s work, but on this point I disagree. Not only is export-oriented industrialization still necessary for development — it is also entirely viable in the contemporary world economy. China and Vietnam are perfect examples. Both economies are still undergoing rapid and highly successful export-oriented industrialization. They are also adopting new automation technologies (such as industrial robots) at an astonishing pace, integrating them into manufacturing ecosystems that continue to absorb huge numbers of workers. In a piece I published yesterday, I explain why export-oriented industrialization remains a necessary and viable path for developing countries.

Ministry of Planning and Development - Ethiopia
Government of Ethiopia and Development Partners Convene High Level Development Forum The Government of Ethiopia and the Development Partners Group convened today in Addis Ababa for the High Level Development Forum, an interactive dialogue aimed at strengthening partnership alignment in support of Ethiopia’s development priorities. Held under the theme Fostering Ethiopia’s Development through Aligning Partnerships, the forum provided a focused platform for candid discussion on inclusive socio-economic development, resilience, and the evolving development finance landscape. The forum brought together, ministers, senior government officials, ambassadors, heads of development cooperation, and representatives of multilateral and international financial institutions. H.E. Dr Fitsum Assefa, Minister of Planning and Development, delivered the keynote address on advancing inclusive growth and resilience. Minster Fitsum highlighted Ethiopia’s recent macroeconomic and structural reforms, sustained broad based growth, and progress across priority sectors and social services, infrastructure, and the digital economy. She emphasized that reforms are designed to translate growth into tangible improvements in living standards and equitable access to services. The forum also featured reflections and open discussions on strategies to foster inclusive and resilient development, peacebuilding and national dialogue, and the importance of coordinated and catalytic partnerships. The discussions reaffirmed the shared commitment of the Government and development partners to adapt cooperation modalities to a changing global context and to ensure that development efforts deliver lasting and inclusive results for the Ethiopian people

A proud moment for #Ethiopia! 🇪🇹 Ethiopia’s candidacy for #COP32 has received unanimous endorsement from the African Group of Negotiators, underscoring the continent’s unified commitment to climate ambition. Held an excellent meeting with @simonstiell UNFCCC Executive Secretary General and discussed the next steps on Ethiopia’s preparations and readiness for hosting COP32. This marks a historic moment and a powerful opportunity to advance global climate action. This is indeed expression of the World’s recognition of Ethiopia’s climate leadership. #COP32Ethiopia #MeetinEthiopia

As Africans, we don't appreciate Ethiopians enough for what they've done to Africa. If it wasn't for @flyethiopian, flights would only be among African countries & their colonial masters. To fly from Lusaka to Kinshasa, you'd go to Paris or Brussels first, then return to Africa !

One of my biggest regrets is the fact that I burned the journals, and short story manuscripts that I had written back when i was in uni. Now when I want to write something related, It is impossible to recover anything from memory alone. But I am still going at it.
