Das letzte Mal, als diese Raffinerie ihre Hauptversorgung verlor, fiel sie auf 50–60 % Kapazität – und Berlin stand innerhalb weniger Wochen vor Kraftstoffengpässen. Die einzige alternative Route führt über den polnischen Hafen Gdańsk. Polen nutzt diese Kapazität bereits für seine eigene Raffinerie. Da die Straße von Hormus gesperrt ist, gibt es nirgendwo in Europa freie Reserven, die eine Lücke dieser Größe füllen könnten. Deutschland hat vier Jahre lang behauptet, seine Abhängigkeit von russischer Energie beendet zu haben. Das Öl, durch das es ersetzt wurde, floss seit 2022 jeden Tag durch eine russische Pipeline.
