@NellytheWillow Supposed to be why El Escorial, beside the village of San Lorenzo is allegedly shaped like a grill. Not sure I see it myself...

Today is the 400th anniversary of the granting of the Charter by King James I! The Charter established the Incorporation of Weavers, Fullers and Shearmen, who secured the standards of the woollen cloth trade that built Exeter as we know it today.

@Dartmoor_Skins We definitely agree! While the lockdown may have scuppered a lot of our celebration plans, it's worth remembering that it's our 400th anniversary of the arrival of our Charter this year!

Sheep have always been a key player in the woollen cloth industry. In the past, the hills of Devon were full of longwool sheep, whose unique fleeces would supply the county's bustling industry! Learn more about our county's woolly wonders: rbst.org.uk/devon-and-corn…

The building of our beautiful hall began in 1472, but our facade is a lot younger - nearly 400 years in fact. In 1875, the hall got a very Gothic 'face lift', replacing the dangerous old front wall. This is also why the hall sticks out among its brick and stucco neighbours! 🧱

The City of Exeter was built off the back of the Woollen Cloth trade. If you take a dander around the Quay and Exe Island, you might notice lots of streets and houses with names related to the industry! Send us snaps of places near you with particularly 'woolly' names 📷

Homeschooling the little ones? Their lessons are a world away from what was taught from 1675 from 1841, when the ground floor of Tuckers Hall operated as a school! Here, local children were taught elements of the cloth trade - preparing for a career in the industry.

In the preindustrial woollen cloth trade, the shears used to trim the cloth could weigh up to 14kg - about the same as a two year old child (or 4500 tea bags if you've been stockpiling). Shear-ly they would've been a handful to use 👀

We can't welcome you back into the Hall for a while yet, so we'll be sharing lots of history on our feed instead. It's no comparison to a guided tour from the Beadle, but we'll do our best! First, let's get you up to speed on our role in Exeter's history: bit.ly/33SqBFT
